My son's little doggie is fading right before our eyes...been diagnosed with degenerative bone disorder, arthritis in his back and hips and Cushings...he's eating less and less. The vet has him on 3 meds to fight the symptoms. I know it's "that" time and I know it's sad, but do any of you know any comfort words?
He and his wife are expecting twins within the next two or three months and they are heartbroken about their four-legged friend they've had with them for nine years. It's a very difficult thing to talk to them about. I'm struggling with what words to say to comfort them...thanks.

Collect all of your pix & your son's family's pix of little doggie, make your family a tribute album of the best of the batch of pix.
I'm sending my sympathies & condolences, too. I - we - have a 17 year old shih tzu . . .
(I only read the first page of posts, I apologize if this is a repeat suggestion.)

Another wonderful, thoughtful idea! My son is watching this thread and getting a lot of comfort and I'm getting a lot of good ideas to do for him and his wife down the road. I think I'll take these ideas and every now and then use one to help them through this ordeal...even years from now!

No one has suggested this yet, and it's a great idea! Thanks! I love shih tzu's - they have great temperaments! We have a 9 year shih tzu/poodle. A great companion, and cute as a button!

My wife of 65 years and I always had a dog and cat. I lost her almost two years ago. Still miss her very much. I still have one very fat cat 10 years old. At night when I watch TV she jumps up on my lap. Pets can keep you company.

This may sound silly, but when your cat jumps on your lap, and then starts licking your face...might be them loving giving you kisses.
My dog kisses me randomly. I'll be sitting watching tv, or reading a book..and suddenly he jumps up and licks my nose.
He kisses my wife in a different way - when she cries, doggie jumps up and lays his head on her shoulder. It's so cute that the sadness abates a little.
I believe that pets know when things are sad in their world, and when things are finished in their world. I wish I could have that knowledge!

Jim,
Nice poem, but I disagree with your theology. The Bible is silent on pets in heaven, but there are several verses in Isaiah that refer to animals with us in a newly recreated earth. Animals are innocent and free from being able to sin as they cannot know Good from Evil so this makes sense. I suspect our pets will be waiting for us. St Francis is said to have specifically believed animals have a place in heaven and based on their inability to sin, probably have a better chance than we who have the ability to know Good from Evil and can choose.
Had to euthanize our Lab this spring after having him for 15 1/2 years. Best dog we ever had, but there comes the point in time that you have to look at what is the right thing to do - keep an animal in prolonged pain, or help the ease to the other side. It's tough, it's hard, and affects people differently. But, when it is all over and done, you look back at the happiness, joy and fun times the pet brought into your lives and remember that as the picture that stays in your mine. We still often expect to see Toby coming down the hallway wagging his tail and cherish the memories.

I'm with you. There is no heaven (at least for me) that is not filled with animals.
The verse I remember concerning that is Luke 3:6 "All flesh shall see the salvation of God". (my brother also has a thing he says about "Not a sparrow will fall that God does not know about". I am not sure where that comes from though. :)

I remember this when we lost Charles Shultz. I think it says it better than any of our words.
Snoopy & Charles Schulz at the Pearly Gates.
Thanks to anyone who is here today. This is the day that it was "time" for my son and daughter in law to put their best friend to rest. I passed on all your kind words to them. I copied and pasted all of your sentiments into a document for them to read tonight and all weekend long. They called me up and thanked me and said this was the most helpful thing I could have given them. They didn't know about the Rainbow Bridge. They cried, but said it made them feel much better. They read all your wonderful words and I am so grateful that I had them to give to them.
Thank you to all of you for all your helpful and kind, thoughtful sentiments. My son and his wife feel better because of all the wonderful, kind, thoughtful words you helped them through this.
Thank you. Thank you.
It's a sad day for all of us who had memories triggered here.
drainbamage - Sad to tell, I lost my 13-yr old mini longhair Dachshund, Molly, a few days ago. Other than my soon-to-be 70 years married WWII German War Bride, Elly, Molly was the most important thing in my life. I still have tearful periods when I look at her doggy bed, and her other favorite places on my property. I still hear her bark at certain places and times, especially when she went out on the patio in the back yard.
Here are some sayings one who loses a beloved pet might find touching.
