I recently purchased a Better Beamer Flash Extender to be used for nature/bird photography. It comes with installation instructions but no info on camera and flash settings. I have done some research on the web but often info contradicts one another. Any hints on starting points? I assume that normal use uses the HSS on my Canon 580 II. Thanks

If you going to use it for a fill flash, reduce your flash EV by 2/3 and your camera EV by 1/3 EV. You also need to make sure your flash/Better Beamer is set so it illuminates your distance subject. If it off as a little as 1 degree (up or down) it will not illuminate it. Arnold

Arnold, Thanks for the information. Are you going to the Birding and Wildlife Festival this week? I'm in Cape Canaveral for the winter. If you are going, maybe we'll run into each other.

Thanks Mborn, link was a nice touch to this thread, wouldn't have gone there otherwise. Great tips!
You may have to elevate it to reduce red eye. Another hint watch keeping on the flash and walking in sunlight it will burn nice little holes in your flash body (voice of experience ). It will also set your car seat on fire or your dining room table if left in the sun light ( stories from photogs) it is a great tool.

Yes, I'm going 2 workshops that Reinier Munguia is giving. In fact I'll be going around Black Point Dr tomorrow morning and then going to the college. Arnold

what flash extender use to get the beamer up above the lens hood?
This is not my camera, but is my usual set up when using flash. The only difference is that with the D500 cameras and SB 5000 flash I am able to eliminate the cord. The brackets I use are from Wimberley.
The BB is designed for 300mm and above. At really long distances when you think the flash won't reach, put it on maximum output. It will still soften shadows and add a catch light. Good advise above. It took a long time, but I did eventually join the "burned a hole in my flash" crowd.
