Welcome to the site. You will learn a lot from the folks here. To bad about the Canon thing tho. Nikons are so much better! :):):) I hope you have as much fun as I have had with the folks here. I have made so many good friends!!!
twilliford, fortunately your Canon 7D can work for beginners as well as experts. My own Canon (650D) has many of the same features--and a nice little book, the manual. I use the manual all the time to find even simple things. I have been an avid amateur for over 30 years, but had to use the manual to see how to shoot in cloudy weather without blue pictures. These things are different with digital (and not the same for all digitals).
One of the first things to learn is the different shooting modes, such as portraits, landscapes, and close-ups (real close, like a flower). Starting with the right mode is a big help--you just set the mode on the top dial. However, with experience you can use the other modes such as Manual. P, or Programmed Auto, is fine for a start, as it most often will let you point and shoot anything typical. All the clever settings and operations are made for particular situations or purposes, so just think what sort of pictures you are taking, then check the manual for what to do--otherwise, try Auto modes and see what happens. You don't have to memorize it or master it before starting.

Thanks to everyone for your comments. I’m looking forward to a great experience.
Welcome. Post and have fun.
Welcome to the hog! The menues might seem overwhelming at first (info overload). Take it slow , shoot in auto , check what settings the camera used. Next move to aperture mode and change the aperture settings , see how it changes the look of the pics & how the camera changed your other settings. That's a good place to start. Read the manual a little at a time while holding & using the camera. When you feel cumfee with that move on to some more. You will grow into your camera , no rush & , remember to have fun.
Welcome. Regardless of the camera, there are hogs who can help. This is a great site for learning.

Welcome aboard. In a way, almost all of us are amateurs, however, some of us get paid(sometimes).
Welcome to great site from a guy who grew up in Evanston. My uncle had a service station in Smoot.
