D700 or D7200..?

Just wondering what others would do and why. D700 at12 mgpixel old, but is FX and built to last.
D7200 is still new at 24 mgpixel but is DX.
They both can be purchased for about the same price. A lot of you still prefer the D700 and would use the D7200 for backup.

Unless you have Full Frame lenses, you are not going to get any benefits from a Fx body. So, that being said, what lenses do you have?

This is at least your third inquiry about the D700. Many, including myself have given you pertinent information on the camera. I even told you where you can purchase one, with a good price, about 2 weeks or so ago. I saw this camera when it was released in 2008. It was an incredible camera. And it had the same fanfare as the D850 today. But, I hope you get one soon. Yes, the D700 has 12.1 megapixels, the D7200 has 24 megapixels. The difference is 7 years between the two. And one is full frame, the other a crop sensor.

Looks like you might have missed the Holiday sale. If so, take your time thinking about it and JUMP when the next sale starts.

Depends on what you shoot. The FX has a wider angle of view, thus better for landscapes. Also achieves a shallower depth of field at the same equivalent focal length. The DX has more reach due to the crop sensor, so better for small birds at a distance. They are both tools with specific plusses and minuses.

Join the ranks of the photoholics, it is never good enough, never. The Expeed 4 sensor on the D7200 is terrific from the images I have seen and so are many of the DX lenses i.e. 18-140MM f3.5-5.6. What are you willing to spend for your addiction (total budget) and what are you willing to carry as none of us are getting any younger.

Get the D7200. Newer processor. Nikon USA has refurbished units on sale right now for $699. That may leave you some room for a new (or refurbished) lens. Many professionals, Thom Hogan, Ken Rockwell, Steve Perry rate the D7200 quite highly.

Two different cameras as you very well know. If you do lots of wildlife and sports the D7200 is a better choice in my opinion. The D700 a good choice if you have FX lenses and need better noise control although the D7200 can do very well also when it comes to noise performance.
The D7200 has more pixels, do you need more than 12? Quality wise using the same lens you will not see a big difference below 13x19 enlargements.

Nobody can tell which best for you. Each of us has a different idea and different needs and wants. However, if that is the only choice for me I would pick the D700. The reason? I already have all the FX lenses and none DX lenses. Sure I can use the FX lenses on the D7200 but the lenses will no longer suitable for what I intended to use when I bought them. For example when I bought the 20mm lens I decided that is wide enough for me as the widest lens I have but when mounting it on the D7200 it no longer serves the purpose.

1. Are you going to shoot video? The 7200 is only of the two that does video.
2. Do you have the resources to build up a stable of FX lenses for the D700? Older legacy Nikkor AF-D glass is a very cost effective way to do that and is from the same time of the D700.
3. If you want a little more in up-to-date features and keeping it around $800 and still going full-frame; consider a D-610 (24mpx).

Its been a long time since I posted anything on this subject, but in the end I ended up with a D300 (12K clicks) and put a (made in Japan) 24-85 FX (36-127.5 DX) non VR lens on it. Both are like new condition. I'm building up my lenses using FX lens only... prices are coming down for the D700, especially since I wanted a nice clean one with low clicks. My batteries and MB D10 are interchangeable. That's my plan and sticking to it. I will keep building up my FX lens collections. Next year I should be able to get that D700. Having a lot of fun with the D300 and getting into the set up of the menu system to changing things around as I need too. Need a 16-35mm to fill the bottom.
