Successor?? The D500 don't need no stinkin' successor!
I'm not sure about the D750, but I've read the D820 is around the corner.

I think it will be around two years before the D500 is replaced. Look out for news from the upcoming CES show Jan. 9-12. I'll bet the D750 replacement will be announced.

Does anyone know if Nikon is planning a new successor to the D500 in the foreseeable future? The D500 is almost 2 years old now. Thinking about buying the D500 but not if there is a new successor on the horizon.
The two things that drive camera development are sensor and processor technology. Sensor technology evolves more slowly than processor technology. For example, the A7R3 uses the same sensor as the A7R2, but a much faster processor--allowing better in-camera processing for improved dynamic range at low ISO and higher frame rate. Processor speed doubles every couple of years.
Another factor to consider is how a company focuses funding for development. Nikon must release a full frame mirrorless camera soon or they will become irrelevant in about four years. That is because mirrorless cameras are rapidly approaching parity in performance with DSLRs, they offer some features that are impossible to implement in DSLRs, and they are significantly less expensive to produce. Since the D500 is still the best crop sensor DSLR, the D850 is the best full frame DSLR, and Nikon urgently needs mirrorless camera, I expect the mirrorless camera development will have priority for development funding for the foreseeable future.
In other words, don't wait for a D500 successor if you want a crop sensor DSLR.
I believe it was about 7 years before the D300 was upgraded to the D500. Everyone thought it was going to be the D400. Since the D500 is presently the best crop sensor camera today, Nikon will cash in on its present merits. This camera is not in the same category as the D3xxx, D5xxx, and D7xxx series. Where a new upgrade comes about every two years.

The MP capacity is such that it will give a minimum of 10fps with a large buffer capacity to allow nearly unlimited continuous shooting. A new generation processor MAY allow a larger MP sensor without crippling performance WHEN such a processor becomes available. As of now its not.
As to the flash, you likely will never see a pop up flash on a Pro model camera ever again now that its no longer needed to trip a remote flash unit due to the internal wireless triggering technology now in these cameras. You need a pop up flash with its VERY limited capability I suggest buying an entry level or mid grade quality camera.
Technology marches on!

Agree, SB300 entry flash works fine. I use it from time to time.

pardon my ignorance, but isn't the d750 an upgrade from the d500?? knowing how things work, Nikon has the new features for the next two upgrades in the vault right now. they will just piece meal them out to us.
No. The D750 is a different product line. It is an FX camera positioned between the D6xx and D8xx.
The D500 is the pro model DX camera. Nikon’s other DX cameras are “lower level” models with four digits. The D7xxxs are closest, with the D7500 the most recent downgrade.

An upgrade such as the one offered by the D500 from the D300 takes years to produce. Same for most other cameras so two years? Keep on seeking amusement elsewhere while waiting... Such as watching the grass grow and taking a time lapse of it...
That D7000 series of upgrades came about every two years. I got my D7000 at a discount when the D7100 was due and then the D7200 arrived a couple years later. Obviously it was a staged marketing tool to get to the price point for the D7200 without making people choke on their wallets, just grab a little bit over time.

D7000, D7100 and D7200 ALL came with the exact same introductory price, $1099. So where is the gradual wallet choking????

Well it could stand some minor upgrading.

That is probably the best assessment of the question so far!! That really helps me understand that a replacement isn't happening anytime soon. Thanks jackpi!

I don't know but Nikon introduced the D750 first so if it's true then the D500 is the down grade rather. By the way the D750 is cheaper than the D500.
Buy a D500 and be happy, it's a great camera!

I think the Df is what you might call a niche camera. It was Retro and yes, cool looking, different anyway. I know someone with one. She walk around with it always with a vintage 50mm on it and people would walk up to her to check the camera out. The Df is rather cute to us old-timers as it looks a lot like a Nikon F.
I love the Df but it doesn't look like any Nikon film camera.
