I am a new member and user of photoshop. I just recently purchased PSE9. I am having difficult with some of the features and the tutorials are not helping. :) Can someone please help me with the teeth whitening? I click the tooth brush and go over the teeth but nothing seems to happen. Also, how to use the layers???? I want to put a layer as a background to an original picture. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you!!

I'd recommend viewing some tutorials on YouTube for starters...

Thanks I will try the youtube tutorials because the other ones were a little confusing for these 2 areas.
I will definitely check this out. Thank you
I purchased PSE 9 awhile ago and took an online course through a program called ED2Go. It is offered through community colleges nationwide. They have hundreds of courses available. It was a 6 week program with 2 classes twice a week, It is downloadable so you can create a paper copy of the lessons for your use or just keep on your computer. The instructor made it so simple. I took the introductory course and will follow up with the advanced after the first of the year. I have taken 8 or 9 courses through this program on various aspects of photography and have been happy with all of them. One other point if you ar a senoir citizen they are free through your state university system. Hope this helps. Anne
Teeth whitening works V-E-R-Y slow and should be used with a lot of patience - - just take it easy.
Consider layers like you would tracing paper - one layer of tracing paper on top of another. I have used more than 60 layers in complicated jobs. You can turn the layers off, by clicking on the eyeball, and "merge visible" layers, lock and/or unlock the layers with the lock icon at the bottom R.
Even after layers have been merged, they can be un-merged by using the universal Ctrl + Z action, one step at a time until you get back where you need to be. Hope this helps
Teeth-whitening in PS9 - a quick trick that usually works is lassoing the teeth and then using levels to lighten. I like this better than the regular whiten tool that just has two settings because I like to whiten teeth depending on age (ie an 80 year is not going to have as white of teeth as a 20 year old).

Before you work on a photo, make a 'duplicate layer'. Click on layer, when the menu drops down, chose duplicate layer, then click OK. Sometimes the tools work better after you make a duplicate layer. For white teeth set your opacity to 5% - as a starter. Don't overdo it. There is a book available from Amazon titled "Top 100 Simplified tips and tricks". It is a visual learning book. Very, Very helpful.
Thank you everyone for the advice. Any other tips would be most beneficial! :)
To white teeth, I "lasso" them, take the saturation of Yellows down to pretty much zero, lighten if needed, then undo the selection
I use the dodge tool. It is at the bottom just above the color tool. Zoom in on the teeth, choose the dodge tool, pic a good size that is not bigger than the teeth. Click on the teeth and paint in brighter teeth. Also works well on the whites of the eyes. Makes the colors of the eyes brighter too. Good luck.
