So glad you didn't fall for the bait, ronichas! They are trying to put you on the defensive and turn this thread around to make you the bad guy. I had a similar visual to what you initially mentioned and still have it.

I really like this place and just try to ignore the seeping poison. It is not easy to do but I won't be driven away by the likes of them.

I am not new to photography. The one thing that often surprises me, is how rude, nasty and mean some of the people...mostly men...are on this site. I tend to picture an old man, in his underwear, alone, lonely and posting negative comments.

Some people feel they have to criticize, insult, make rude remarks, make fun of, etc, when people post something. They do this even if they aren't even interested in the topic.

This is not always a friendly site. There are people that are very helpful, but the rude ones take away from that.

"Whatever you do, don't look in your manual or visit the Nikon site."
"I've always wondered how the human can be so naïve, such that their brain thinks $174.99 is far less expensive than $175. "
"I think too many sellers on UHH have an inflated opinion of what their old, unwanted equipment is worth."

I would like to request in 2018, that those people hold back on their negative comments.
If you don't have something nice to say, don't post anything.

There are newbies here, to both photography and to the use of the computer. Yes, it is easy to say, *just google it* but there is a way to say it without being mean about it. That might not be the first thing someone thinks about when they are trying to get some information.

We all share a love of photography, lets be kind to one another, be helpful, or don't help at all.

Wishing all a Healthy & Happy Holiday.

Very well put, Roni. I was a victim of the LMGTFY crowd when I first started on the forum. Fortunately, I have a very thick skin and was able to just ignore the members who felt bigger because they belittled others. Unfortunately, we have lost valuable, knowledgeable members who willingly and politely shared their knowledge with those of us who were in dire need of help. I am forever grateful to the remaining polite, helpful, knowledgeable members here. Thanks to them, my love of photography has grown and it is those members who keep me here. Every morning I look forward to seeing what's up here on the UHH.

And right back at you with my wish for a Happy and Healthy Holiday and New Year.

I enjoy this site and have learned a lot. I own a Sony A7II and after giving up trying to "understand" the manual, have actually learned how to get the most out of my camera through comments on this site. I am indeed grateful to those who willingly share their knowledge and experience. On the other hand, there are those who can't and won't do anything that doesn't elevate their own personal sense of self....sad. In the military we called them "the ten percent." Every group has them, and there is nothing anyone can do to change them. We all know them, they sit in the back of every group meeting, offer nothing but are the first to criticize. The rest of us just need to go on despite them. There are so many fine folks here who go out of their way to help others. Those are the folks who make this a great site. To all those who care about each other, a VERY HAPPY AND HEALTHY HOLIDAY SEASON AND NEW YEAR.

Isn't that a bit of a speciesist comment?

We'll have PETA on our asses next suing the Good Shepherd for exploiting the rights of sheep, donkeys, oxen, and camels for appearing in a Nativity scene!

'Tis the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, DASHER! now, DANCER! now, PRANCER and VIXEN!
On, COMET! on CUPID! on, DONNER and BLITZEN!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!

And Saint Nick ( not Old Nick ) apparently came from Turkey. Since up to 98 percent of the population are Muslims, Christians are obviously a minority religion in Turkey. Because it is a secular country, the only Muslim country in the world that has no state religion, the Constitution guarantees religious freedom, and tolerance is the rule. Perhaps we should all try to be young Turks!

It is the Season of Good will to ALL!

I have not read through most of the pages, so bear with me if I am duplicating others comments.

Maybe we need a section where the "Basic of Photography Questions" can be presented. Thus bypassing the main folder of "normal" or "advanced"
questions where this issue is now being dis"cussed"

WOW... and 14 pages later I finally get to chime in on a OP article that I wish I would have written. UHH represents one more well-intended forum that is beginning to look like the comments section in most online news sources. The internet has given home to those people who feel beaten up and disenfranchised and mad at the world, to hide behind a keyboard and finally be able to speak up on their pent-up frustrations with life and the world, and get away with the anonymity of the internet. In my opinion, they have no real authority in their real world and so they get to be the "mean boss" when they go online. I guess they will not change, so I suggest they will be more irritated if you just ignore them and not engage them. That is what they seek, confrontation and the ability to be bigger, smarter and talk down to people they have never seen. The rest of us, either come here to seek help and information, or to give help and information. Do not allow yourself to be diverted by those who do not share that mission. You will not convert them or change their minds. Love at Christmas to all who come here in a spirit of peace and may the rest of you watch in envy.

Well said Peterff -- and I'm sure the OP didn't mean anything by the "age" comment. I was surprised by the comment, but it appears to have been accidental.

Yes -- Happy Holidays to everyone on UHH, of all races, political affiliations, gender, religious beliefs, and age, etc...!! -- and a Happy New Year!!

Like Matt Granger always says -- "Get your gear out!"
