I don't use mine much because of the fixed f/8 aperture. I liked it outside on bright days but it has the depth of field about the thickness of a sheet of paper.
I heard the comments that the Minolta 500mm Reflex lens has low contrast and doesn't focus that sharply. Well, I'm not finding that at all. Using a full frame Sony A99.
I have an old version of that very lens. It is difficult to mate with my D7100 DSLR (there is slight interference between its tripod socket and the battery compartment of the camera) but it is possible to get it attached. However, the focus is very hard to accomplish--probably much tighter than necessary and requires a lot of strength. It does take good photos, though.

Thanks to all in advance!
Haven't use one since film. I recall it was a pain to focus with the dark viewfinder, and image quality was only so-so.

I have used the 500 and 1000 mirror lenses with my D800 but not the D5 or D850. I might try but they have limited use.
I have a Vivitar 500mm f/8 that had the old Canon FD MOUNT. I purchased from B&H an adapter for my Canon EOS T5i and my 80D. I am surprised how well it works. I use the Apature Function, set it at f/8, OR the MANUAL Function, and it works great. It can be Hand held, BUT it is better with a tripod and either a time release or a cable release.
I think that you are better off with you Nikon, because I think that the older mount will work with the newer DSLR cameras. Good luck, happy holidays, and good shooting.

I've had one for years. I use it with a monopod, on Nikon fm2 and FA. It came with neutral density filters. It's limited, but when you need a really long lens it is more convenient than my huge 400, or even my Novoflex 300mm. I like it.

all mirror lenses were roughly similar - all produced pretty much the same results. the 500mm and 250mm minolta rokkors were exceptionally good with colour materials. with the nikkor and other lenses, be sure you also obtain the 4 rear filters for the lens. these actually complete the optical formation of the lens.
the limited aperture of f8, of course, will require you to make adjustments via shutter speed of if digital iso.
