Good article, but not so good for a beginner as how would he/she even know where to begin in setting ISO, shutter speed and aperture ? Enter P mode as it would be a good starting point to learn proper exposure and not totally missing a shot that is not static. The summary of the article that each mode has a purpose is spot on. A professional as Shaw would know good starting points in manual, not so much a newbie.

we elders have all started with manual. what's so hard about it? you have a meter. line it up in your view finder and get the correct exposer. relying on auto everything is not going to teach you much. I still use manual about 50% of the time.
