I have been using the Canon 70-200mm f2.8L lens (without IS) to shoot local community college soccer games in daylight. Due to it's weight I have used a monopod which limits fluid following of the action. I am considering going to the F4L non-is for less weight and not needing the monopod. I know the comparisons of the two lenses regarding f stops etc and just have one question. Will the F4L give image quality comparable to the F2.8L in daylight conditions?
I've found the image quality between the two is comparable with the f/4 maybe even a touch better... And it is definitely easier to handle!

I own both lenses, each have their place. Shooting outdoor sports I use the 70-200 f/4 and hand hold it with great results. If I use the "tank" 70-200 f/2.8 a great and equal lens it gets a bit heavy after a while. A monopod helps but I move around to much and have to be fast to get the shot and that stick just seems to get in my way...90% of the time the f/4 is my go to lens, my favorite lens for outdoors. Indoor sports I prefer the f/2.8. If I had a choice of one over the other I get more use out of the f/4....
The F4 lens will definitely be better for shooting soccer games in daylight.
Thanks.... I have been using the Manfrotto 3229 tilt head for several years which preceded the RC234 that you reference.

F4 IQ is comparable
...get the Manfrotto RC234 tilt head for your monopod....you will get fluid motion ;-)
I have the f/4 non IS and I have found it to be tack sharp edge to edge, plus it's light enough for me to carry around all day. Love it.
