I purchased the 18-400mm a short while ago. I have a Canon 80D. I did purchase the Tap-In console, as I plan to have the lens for some time, and it will help me with firmware updates that may come down the road. I was going to try to micro-adjust AF, but realized it would be a long task, as that lens has 8 basic focal lengths. Following advice from Dustin Abbott on youtube, I found I could send it in to Tamron (paid only the shipping cost to Tamron for camera and lens) and, because the lens has a 6 year warranty, they do the adjustments with your camera, reset the microadjustments needed at each focal length (within the lens) in respect to your camera, and ship it back to you in a short turnaround, at no cost to you. The lens was needing AF microadjustment; now it seems to be "spot on." I would highly recommend doing this; it'll save you a lot of time and hassle.

I had to get the Tap-In for my 18-400 because I like to see the image stabilization thru the viewfinder. The lens comes with the IS set to only activate when the shutter is open. My Sigma 150-600mm C also had to be changed, so I also have the same thing for Sigma's now.

B&H had the Tammy plus TapIn for $649
I wouldn't get the lens without the TapIn Module
Unfortunately, the lens I received Stank On Ice, and was returned in less than 12 hours

Does fine tuning at the long end compromise focus accuracy at the medium and short ranges?

I don't know. I am guessing, however, that if it does, the six other points of adjustment would compensate for it.
