This is a social media platform. I think you will find the answers very age related. Folks between 60 and dead have no interest in it. They find it a gimmick, a waste of time and don't much like having to upload images often and keep up with it. The amount of that age group using Instagram is going to me even smaller. I have found it to be showcase of fantastic images that I can only hope to equal someday and a fantastic way to realize what a really quality landscape, portrait of wildlife/nature shot should look like. Most of the time qualify Exif information is there to see what body, lens, and setting were used to create truly inspired shots.

I just want to raise a hand. As someone approximately in the middle between 60 and dead (73), I use it frequently and happily. Maybe your thesis is generally true, and I'm just an outlier. Wouldn't be the first time.

I do as a way to share albums with people via email, facebook or instagram. If you don't want photos to be used by other people, you can choose to prevent that in the settings.

Moreover, I use it a lot. Not every day, but several posts most weeks. I think it's a wonderful opportunity to show my work to, and get feedback from, my distant friends, and to thousands (millions?) of people on flickr that I don't know.

A new wrinkle that Yahoo has imposed is not one I applaud: you can only post an image to 30 groups, unless you have a paid account, a "PRO" account, in which case your new limit is 60 groups. I don't like the limits at any number, and I don't like the "pay to play" aspect of the PRO bonus. It seems to put a premium on posting to larger groups, which might inhibit the growth of newer groups and older, smaller groups, since you generally get a bigger audience in the bigger groups.

Still, it remains a free way to show my stuff around to friends and to strangers, and I intend to keep using it.

When I first joined I used to post to a lot of groups. But then, the rules got to be a little bit on the ridiculous side like 1 post fave and comment on 5. It got so time consuming that I realized that it was not that necessary that I post to groups. I still belong to a lot of groups that I have not posted to for a very long time. I liked that I got fave and comments and I got numbers. But as time went by, it got to be less important. What I have found since my work on flickr is in the creative common license, gets a lot of use on other websites. Some of the uses of the photo on the websites have been hilarious.

Go to your own Flickr account and look at the top of the page where you should see "You" "Explore" and "Create" on the upper left. Click Explore.

What you're now viewing is a special Flickr-currated photostream of worldwide images released to public in the past 24-hours. Getting an image selected into Explore has a significant boost to your viewing statistics and typically a corresponding increase in followers.

Getting into Explore is by invite-only and there's a bit of fuzzy science to the process of receiving an invite.

Looks like I would have never known about this one...and unlikely to ever make the grade. LOL.

Actually Kim, many of your images could be Explore candidates, but here's where the fuzzy science comes into play. The link below goes into much more detail, but a few items that are easy to try are:

1. Start with a recent image (past day to few weeks old, max). Explore is very "timely" in reflecting current images and the current environment.
2. Upload and set to Public within a short period of clock time.
3. Add the image to none or only a few groups and avoid any of the "fav" accumulator groups within the initial 24-hours.
4. Use a top-notch image and avoid large watermarks, some suggestions say no watermarks.
5. Release only 1 or a small few images to public. If using a group of images, set the most likely candidate to the first in the sequence in your photostream (last uploaded, or edit in Camera Roll).
6. If the invite is made, accept immediately, so actively monitor your account when trying for Explore for a recent upload.

Thanks for taking a look and the compliment. By default I do most of the suggestions...I create my albums to share with friends and family. Im just truly passionate about being outside, nature and beauty. Photography is a bucket list item. The Hog and 2 professional photographers have taught me what I know. I am grateful!

I have a Flickr account. But have not used it much. I did get a free Smugmug account with a purchase of a photo editor, and started using it today.

I started using flickr long before (2006) I found UHH (2014). It was the first photo sharing site I joined and although I've been relatively inactive in posting for a couple years (no time) I still look at the site. It was more user friendly before they started updating it (and removing features in the process), but that's probably related to computer security. I find it different from UHH in that I use it for sharing photos more than discussions in groups, wheras I use UHH more for discussions than photo sharing.

Use it and like it. Probably not the best out there but it fits my needs.

I use Flickr and consistently post 1-2 photos per week. I don't know who is managing Flickr right now (it must be a monster to manage) but things aren't running so smoothly. But still, it's a fun site with many talented people show casing their work.

I began sharing photos on the Internet using Webshots. Later, Yahoo brought out their Photos product, and I started using it instead. Then Yahoo bought out Flickr and provided a slick application to migrate photos from their Photos product directly to Flickr--pictures, descriptions, and all--and I did it. Then when Webshots changed to Smile and restricted access to the photos hosted there, I manually migrated all my photos from there to Flickr. I now have about 41,000 pictures hosted on Flickr and I'm extremely pleased with the product. The ability to create a hierarchical structure for organizing them is a big help for me. My Flickr home page is https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/collections. (BTW, I will be 80 in 2 days.)

I generally do not upload photos into Groups unless someone asks me to do so. I get a few "favorite" notifications every month, but am not excited about them. I've had more than 1.2 million "views" of my pictures there.
