Nikon 5100 shutter release mode problem

When I set my shutter release on my 5100 to continuous, after one or two shots it automatically reverts to single shot release. This is especially annoying when shooting snow geese taking off. Anyone else have this problem? Thanks in advance for any help.

Is it actually switching to single shot mode, or have you outrun the buffer? If you are shooting in RAW or RAW/JPG it's easy to outrun the buffer, as it slows down to save the photos to the SD card. Just a thought...

If that is the problem, try just shooting in JPG mode for shots you want continuous mode.

Look too at what size, type and speed of SD card you're using.

I am shooting in RAW/fine so that is probably the reason. Thanks.

This chart is from Nikon's specifications for the D5100. It should be able to buffer 10 shots when set to RAW + JPEG fine. After that, the memory card speed could slow it down.

Barb, take a look at the card you're using. Should be a class 10. Also if you shoot in RAW the buffer will be overrun.

Sounds like you are filling the buffer as others have stated. I don't think the camera will change modes on its own. With a buffer a that small it will fill up pretty fast.

Best,
