Where do you think the money comes from to fix your roads, pay the fire & police, take care of your parks and so many other things that state and local governments provide? Without taxes how do you propose government do these things?

Which is why our ancestors sailed across the pond. Unfortunately time took it's toll and now the distinction between kings and a huge, bloated bureaucracy, involved in all aspects of one's life, is becoming blurrier and blurrier.

It is interesting how people talk about government and bureaucracy as if they were living, breathing entities. Who do you think makes up the government? People just like you and me who we have elected.

I buy allot of equipment from Adorama and B&H. Both are in Manhattan and neither has does business in California. As a result, they do not collect California sales tax.

Just to be clear though, you still owe California sales tax on the purchase.

Let me know the cite of the Texas State Tax Statue that says I would owe the state sales tax for a purchase I make from B&H.

I wonder if they had any one (or two) in mind?

'' or if a New York electronics store sells you a camera through its website and does not charge Texas sales tax, you owe Texas use tax on the price of the item."

I don't know but that would answer the person who questioned my original post and accusing me for making false statement.

I just wish they would spend it on those things instead of grants to study things like the sex life of knats and abortions.

This past year, B&H opened a warehouse in NJ and now charges sales tax for shipments to the state.

There are certain items that do require taxes to pay. No one would argue that most of what you mention is necessary. The problem lies in the fact that government by it's very nature cannot limit itself to necessities. These politicians and bureaucrats firmly believe that their job description is to figure out new, innovative ways to spend other people's money. Take a gander at how much we owe and how fast is has grown. At my age I really don't care. For those who have children and grand children just remember, there is no free lunch. Someone is going to have to pay the piper.

I was charged sales tax when I purchased a used lens from KEH. And I live in California.

Do you know if they charged you California sales tax and report and pay the money to California or if they are charging you the tax for the state in which they are located and possibly pocket the money?

One person's necessity is another person's luxury. If a town has enough money to build a senior center or a youth center but not both, which do they build? Anytime governments spend money someone benefits. It might not be you or me this time but next time it will. So, who is to say what is necessary and what is not?

Legally all collected sales taxes must be forwarded to the taxing authority. It is a felony, both state and federal, not to do so.
