Chuck, I highly recommend Luminar 2018. It's easier to learn and does non destructive post processing and is affordable.

FastStone, excellent photo organizer, photo editor and RAW editor as well. And most important, it’s free.
Excellent paid programs Corel’s PaintShop Pro 2018 $48-60, Serif’s Αffinity $55 and many more

Of course you will find those who only know made of clay adobe as tho owing PS make their photos better than those done with a free program like GIMP. They of course think the only cameras that actually take "good photos" are either Canon or Nikon. They would pay $25 for a burger vs eating the same burger next door for $5 saying that fool's phrase, you get what you pay for... "where's the beef? !"

Jerry's list is as usual great, but one of the new programs on the scene for basic editing Topaz Studio basic. Is a free download and one can buy useful modules at a reasonable price to do special things. At least you can get started free and there are educational webinars. www.topazlabs.com

Luminar has confirmed issues by its operators with Windows. It was made for Mac and now they issued a version for Win. It may work for you but it is not stabilised yet. I returned it. Look around these forums.

That reminded me of an experiment that was done. They had a group of people rate a particular meal at several restaurants that had a wide range of prices. The higher priced meals got the best rating. It turned out they had the same chef use the same ingredients in each place.

Go figure.

PhotoShop started out as a free program given away with scanners. That's because Adobe originally decided not to buy it from the developers.

PaintShop started out as shareware.

I think Lightroom would be a better choice. However, you can get both Photoshop and Lightroom and all updates with tutorial help for $10.00 a month.

Some folks really can't afford $10 a month even though it may seem like pocket change to many. That $10 a month could be going to pay for the camera.

When somebody asks about free software, that usually doesn't mean $25, $50, or even $10/month.
There is plenty of free software that will do everything that many owners of PhotoShop actually do. Photoshop is surely a great, useful, even necessary piece of software for some. For the rest it seems to be a badge of honor that doesn't shine any light on their work product.

Just sayin'

Two thumbs up! Luminar 2018 is available for around $50 or so to purchase. It is intuitive, powerful, and has more amazing features than I may ever use. Free is OK, but try learning GIMP and you may find $50 is not that hefty an investment after all! Also, the $10/month for LR and PS is a raging good deal for everything you get, including ongoing updates and support.

Hi Chuck,
In the recent past I got a free version of Photoshop CS2 on a download from Adobe. Here is a hyperlink to the site but it now says "not free" but I see you can also download PS 7. I've downloaded both and they seem to work fine. You'll have to see if this link works or not (https://adobe-photoshop-cs2.en.softonic.com/). Take care & ...

Yep. Getting Photoshop CC (and Lightroom) for $10 a month is a deal.

Sorry, but it sounds like someone who buys a car and wants free gas because they can't afford it. $10/mo gets you want you need. That means you do without a six pack of craft beer, a cheap bottle of wine, or a ticket to a movie - once a month. It's not the software you can't afford, it's the camera.

You can always use the downloads from the camera manufacturers if all else fails. Did you really not expect to pay for software when you bought your camera and lens(es)?

My rant for today. Good luck finding something for nothing.

I would also recommend FastStone. It's capable and free. I believe it's only available for Windows however.

For advanced post processing features you'll have to pay for most. While I think Gene51's reply was a bit terse, (sorry Gene) I agree with the expressed sentiment.
I can offer you a free copy of Picasa3 via my Dropbox. If interested, send me a PM with your "real" email address and I'll send you a link to the download. Picasa is free and has basic editing features, but it will not do more advanced processing. I'm not a pro.

I use the online version of pixlr. You can also download it if you want. It is free. To use it your files need to be in .jpg format. Basic editing is relatively easy. It also provides some more complex functions as you progress. Give it a try. I think it might be just what you want.
