I think some of the English teachers that felt compelled to point out the typo need to chill out.

Do you mean the “Spelling SS?”; they are a department of the “Grammar Gestapo.”

Excluding the fragrances, chemically why not Windex on a microfiber cloth for lens cleaning ?

The advantage of a sensor cleaner is it leaves NO residue. Lens cleaners leave a residue that has to be wiped/polished away. Does sensor cleaner attack the lens coating? I don't think so but check.
Does polishing the lens with a cloth scratch the lens? Minute scratches probably. Would you rather have a new fresh out of the box lens or one that is constantly polished with a cloth while not fitted to your camera?
Then again, does it make any censor reason?

It seems to me that this would be safe and effective. On the other hand, I'm sure censors don't have the same coatings that lenses do. Anyone have a definitive answer as to whether this is a safe thing to do?

It's alcohol, regardless what they name the product. It's not the kind you would want to drink, though. I bet sensor cleaner is more expensive than lens cleaner, like those Zeiss pads.

Having seen the title, I have to do this (Flip Wilson used to say: “The devil made me do it.”)....

So here goes: As a kid, when my mom couldn’t find the censor cleaner, she would use soap.

Hilarious!

Ben,

Not to be disrespectful, first I saw Lense as an alternative spelling for lens on the UHH after close to forty years doing photography and never seeing "lense" in a book, article, manual, or pamphlet. And it seems to have some legitimacy (not to me though). I might go for "lense" being German or French for lens but it is not. But I am pretty sure Censor is not an alternative spelling for Sensor. A very different word...

Checking a Dictionary:

cen·sor
ˈsensər/
noun
noun: censor; plural noun: censors

1.
an official who examines material that is about to be released, such as books, movies, news, and art, and suppresses any parts that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security.
synonyms: expurgator, bowdlerizer; More
examiner, inspector, editor
"the film censors"
Psychoanalysis
an aspect of the superego that is said to prevent certain ideas and memories from emerging into consciousness.
2.
(in ancient Rome) either of two magistrates who held censuses and supervised public morals.

verb
verb: censor; 3rd person present: censors; past tense: censored; past participle: censored; gerund or present participle: censoring

1.
examine (a book, movie, etc.) officially and suppress unacceptable parts of it.
"my mail was being censored"
synonyms: cut, delete parts of, make cuts in, blue-pencil, redact; More

I use sensor cleaner and the label says it is pure ethyl alcohol so it's not supposed to leave any residue. It works fine on lenses but it is very expensive compared to ordinary lens cleaners which use mostly methyl alcohol, which is very cheap.

As stated by other members, use the proper tool for the intended job. If you’re happy with the MC cleaner stick with it.
I’m surprised no one mentioned Leica lens cleaning pads. They are very good too.

As per using the Zeiss pads...when picking up my new glasses I asked what they recommend for cleaning. Of course they had their own brand of cleaner they recommended, followed by dish soap and water...dry with micro fiber cloth. I asked about the Zeiss pads...they responded saying it was the worst thing you could use on your new glasses. They said alcohol destroys the coatings on eyeglasses. Personally I never cared for the Zeiss pads...too coarse texture and seemed to smear.

On a side note...another place I purchased eye glasses...all they used was alcohol with a micro fiber cloth.

Kind of like asking a question on the internet...lol

Eclipse optic cleaning fluid says it cleans both lens and sensor.

I couldn't find them. Who sells them? I did find a Leica cloth.

Most of the lens cleaning pads I found, Zeiss, Nikon, Bausch & Lomb all look like they come from the same place. They are the same size and except for the labels come in the same dispenser box.
