Does anyone else have this problem?
I'm an experienced LR user, using CS6. I have a PC running the latest Win10, with 16GB of RAM and lots of room on the hard drive. My catalogs are very small. I travel, and make a new catalog for each day, so there are fewer than 500 photos in a catalog. I have tried using LR with video adapter acceleration and without. It happens with just LR open or with other software running as well.
I will be working away, and suddenly, without warning, the computer completely freezes. Nothing works. The only solution is to power down and start up again.
I assume it might be some USB device or software interaction, but don't have enough time or energy to begin deleting everything and starting fresh. I may have to delete and reinstall LR.
But if this is a more widespread problem, then I can relax knowing I'm not alone. That doesn't help much, but I don't want to be the only person experiencing these awful freezes.

I've been using LR since v3, and I have never had such an issue. However, you do have a peculiar way of using the catalog system, though I don't think it is contributing to the problem. I have a single catalog, with over 200,000 images in it. I save my work by job or event. If I do a wedding, it gets it's own folder on the hard drive, but it is added to the catalog. If I do 4 weddings a year, for 5 yrs I have 20 weddings in my "weddings" collection. I primarily shoot landscape and wildlife. My collections reflect where I've been and what I've photographed. In the case of birds, I have catalogs for raptors, flycatchers, waders, waterfowl, sparrows, warblers, etc etc etc. In your system it would be impossible to see all the raptors I've taken over the past 15 yrs. In my system I can navigate to or specify in a quick search the word "raptor" and I have them all. If I want to narrow the search, I can specify "raptor" and "2010-2012" and get just those shots. And so on.
But, like I said, I don't think that having numerous catalogs is causing your issue. And I can't imagine what might be the cause. I wish I could be more helpful.
Just a guess, assure your phone is not connected to your laptop when opening / using LR.

No. It only happens on my desktop, not the laptop. I use the laptop while traveling, then the desktop when I'm back home. The phone is not connected to the desktop.

OK - I and others have noted problems with Android phones and some versions LR. I was guessing ...
Your description is not at all common. Extremely far from widespread. Something is screwed up in your system. You said you are using CS6 but did not say which Lightroom version. Did Lightroom come with CS6. Something sounds off.
Adobe provides a very good user to user forum with some seriously good experts. You should try that. There are other independent forums if you don't like Adobes. A few UHH members are very good, but there are true devoted experts at some other site.

I'm using standalone LR version 6.9. Thanks for the advice about the Adobe forum. I am a happy Hogger, so that's to where I turned first.
You could try and run a repair on your LR installation..it might fix the issue. go to programs an features...click on Lightroom and at the top click repair.

This is indicative of memory becoming corrupted. There may well be a background process running that tries to access a memory address already occupied, or could be some other running app, but I’ve never experienced it with any Adobe software. It’s frustrating I know. I’ve had to work through similar issues. The Task Manager is your friend. Good luck.

I too have LR Version 6 Latest non cloud version. imac 16 gigs ram with 60,000 images in the catalog. OSX 10.3.2 High Sierra.
For some strange reason if i do a global search using a text word it corrupts the catalog file beyond use and repair. I have learned to just throw it out immediately and use the most recent back-up to get things going again. LR tech support is of no help on this point. Since i have been a LR user since Version 1, i am wondering if this was not done on purpose to force switching to the cloud version. One of their updates started the problem.
With all previous versions this unique problem never occurred.
Try turning off, (uncheck box) graphics processor. It is located in edit, preferences, performance.
Yes thanks it is turned off. Also re-installing LR made no difference either.
I had a similar problem with Lightroom CC after their last update Lightroom just stopped working. I had to have my I.T. guy tweak my power settings to fix it. the way he explained it to me is that Adobe when they do a upgrade they do it to only support the latest technology my computer is 5 years old. And from what I've read on Adobes website Windows 10 is not a supported operating system on CS6

Hi,
Last night I had my first experience with such problem. I have Lightroom Classic (non-cloud version) with an Android desktop running Windows 10. I was working in the Develop module attempting to export a jpeg version of a raw file that I had been working on. Suddenly the screen froze, and a dialog box from Adobe popped up advising that Lightroom had crashed, and requesting a "crash report" and permission to obtain data which might help to resolve the problem. I clicked on the box granting permission to "send" the "crash report". The dialog box went away, but nothing else happened. The screen remained frozen, I could not close it or maneuver away from it. Finally, by using the old "Control, Alt, Delete" maneuver, the Task Manager box came up, I was able to close Lightroom, and went on to other things for a while. Later, I launched Lightroom, it opened, and worked in the (apparently) normal manner.
I am perplexed and have no idea what to expect. It does make one wonder if we are not being surreptitiously herded toward the "Cloud" version with higher fees. If you or other UHH'ers obtain further information about this phenomenon, I would be interested to hear about it--along with any recommended precautions, fixes, or solutions.
Microsoft recently pushed a Windows 10 update that seems to be creating heartache for a lot of people. update all your drivers then look at
start ; windows administrative tools ; component services ; event viewer (local) click the+ by critical then search google for the event ID
that might point you in the right direction
look at your windows update history, could be something didn't go well
