Image Overlay Up to 3 RAW images

Reading the Olympus website about the OM-D E-M1 Mark II, under Operability, it lists;
Image Overlay....... Up to 3 RAW images
Could this be talking about a multiple (up to three) images on the same frame, or image?

From here: https://omdem5.wordpress.com/e-m5-resources-in-sub-menus/tips-tricks-2/overlay-up-to-3-seperate-photos/

We know the E-M5 can do multiple exposures But that is taking 2 or more photos in sequence. And you can’t adjust the opacity.

But, if you have photo’s that you want to “Blend” or make one photo from many (up to 3), you have to use the “Overlay” in playback mode. You are given the option to adjust the amount of overlay opacity. which is something you cant do with multiple exposures. These can be from any photos on your memory card. So, you make a multiple exposure from any 3 photos.

And create a new non-raw image, IF I read this post correctly.

I saw nothing about the resulting image being raw or non-raw, but it did say the images used must be raw. FWIW, I don't use Olympus these days, and knew nothing of this feature. It was just easy to do a quick Google on the subject to find this article. :-)

Well, if you process after a capture, even in camera... You do not have a raw file anymore.

Olympus OM-D multiple exposure mode
A little Googling... maybe helpful.

Shooting mode as per PASM top dial, must be set to one of P, A, S, M
set shooting settings before activating multiple exposure
in the Menu, go to camera 2 and select Multiple Exposure
select options:
Frame = 2f (2 frames will be taken, but only one if Overlay = ON) to activate this mode (OFF deactivates it)
Autogain = if ON, the brightness of each frame is set to 1/2 and the images are overlaid.
Overlay = if ON, it will display all the RAW files on the camera to allow you to select a RAW image already recorded on the memory card (must have been taken by the same camera model) to be overlaid with another exposure and stored as a separate image. The number of pictures taken is one. However, the process can be repeated.
to overlay 3 or more frames:
Select RAW, and select a RAW file and use the [Overlay] option to make repeated multiple exposures.
When [Overlay] is set to [On], the images displayed when a RAW image is selected are developed with the settings at the time of shooting.

I can see that the file would get very large if it wasn't converted to a JPG, or some other more compressed file format.

If RAW contains all the information the sensor recorded, what is the advantage of "stacking" files? Would you not gain the same advantage (if there is one) by processing the same RAW file two or more times and "stacking" the results?
