Problem is that it probably still won't be 8x10 unless you use a larger sheet of paper. The need for an easel border so the easel holds the paper flat prevents a print from being a true 8x10. It usually ends up as 7.5 x 9.5 which means some cropping as the aspect ratio is slightly different. This realization has become an annoyance for me in larger sizes when it comes to framing without a mat.

Ever heard of vacuum easels, Kris?

The golden ratio is 1:1.618. It is important in Western composition of art, design and architecture. It involves the Fibonacci sequence and is what the "rule of thirds" is derived from.

The rule of thirds is actually derived from thirds. It is not in any way related to the golden ratio. And the golden ratio is not in any way involved in most art or architecture. It is simply the number that any series, not just the Fibonacci, of that form trends to.

Print an 8x12 image centered on 11x14 paper. Use an 8x12 opening matt on 11x14 board with 11x14 frame.

And what's your pick for the perfect format camera, to attain the Perfect 8x10 withOUT cropping, Ecurb?

Why does it matter? It is a highly limited and pointless question

Reminder: This is the Topic Post Title: In Pursuit of - The Perfect 8x10, w/o cropping ... what's YOUR solution?

And THIS is the Lead Post:

All answers are acceptable (other than the 8x10 view camera) - just be sure to add the appropriate math to come up with your choice - okay?

You are free to choose your rectangles in any way you want. And I am free to choose mine showing other ratios. All of this is meaningless.

Perhaps, it would've been better if I had phrased the lead question a little differently .... maybe it should've been like this:

Which medium format camera comes closest to attaining the "Perfect 8x10" ... 645, 6x7, 6x9 or some other not named?

[quote=JPL]Why do you want to use 8x10? It is a ridiculous format.
The current and future viewing format for most pictures is 16:9. Use that.[/q

8 x10 is a standard photo size and ideal for framing using an 8 x 10 frame...the only reason I ever crop to 16 x 9 is to view a slideshow on a wide screen TV.
I have no idea why you wouldn't just crop a 3:2 ratio pic to 8 x 10 and save all the unnecessary BS..

8x10 is .80 ratio short divided by long side, or 1.25 the other way. Do the math! See what comes closest to that!
By the way, no popular formats are at the golden ratio.

This is an impossible scenario as 8x10 isn't the shape of pictures producing by DSLRs. That being said I wonder why you would want an 8x10 unless you have a bunch of old frames for that size. I find 8x10 to be sort of boring. Too close to square. 7x10, 8x12, 16:9. These are much more interesting dimensions. A lot of my work is shown on a daily basis on screens, so-16x9. For prints-9x13 or 17x23. If I have to cram something into 8x10 framing I have to look hard to find just the right picture because that just isn't the way my mind 'sees'. #1 Boring. #2 Ahhh, nice.

Have you a supplier for 16:9 frames...never seen one in my life...let me know if you have a source...

I knew this sounded familiar, SX ... you copied it from JPL ...

If I wanted to crop, I would ... but my compositions are usually right on the mark, to begin with ... so I wouldn't have any idea where to even begin the cropping procedure ....

I'd far rather be steered in the right direction so that I can obtain the necessary hardware to attain a Perfect 8x10 withOUT cropping!

Which is the objective, here ....

I didn't copy it from anywhere, I never read all six pages, it's my opinion only...maybe others feel the same way...
I still don't understand your problem...I crop to 8 x 10 all the time...such a simple process in my editing programme...if you don't have any idea how to crop, there are several free editor/viewer programmes out there that make the process very simple...
Cheers,Ron.
