Beatles Photos

Having read the reactions to the post about the celebrity nude photos, I wondered how does one make a few dollars from celebrity photos. I have shots of the Beatles and no, they are not in the nude. Back in 1965, fresh out of high school, I was among a room full of photographers at Capitol records for a press conference advertising the release of the Beatles' new film, "Help." At the time I took about two dozen shots of the them with my (new at the time) Rollei. Unfortunately, one of the rolls, the one taken backstage at their Hollywood Bowl concert has been lost to time.

But I still have the other negatives from the presser. They are in black and white and only about a dozen or so prints from the negatives exist. I still have the negatives, which are still in good condition considering their age. I have ensured the pictures will always exist as I long ago had the negs transferred to digital and saved on a DVD. So I am considering selling the original negatives, but have no idea about how to market them. They are quite good, but not radically different from any taken by the other press photographers in the room.

If I'd had half a brain I'd have kept the Golden Press Pass I was issued by radio station KRLA and have guarded the negatives from the concert with my life. They had shots from the the wings of the Bowl and of the Beatles running off-stage and leaping into an armored car, right in front of me. But I was a teenager.

It is kind of fun having shots of people who later became famous, for better or worse. I still have all my 2 1/4 negs from Pamela Smarts wedding.

The full story is even more interesting. In order to gain entrance to the press conference, my friend (who went as a reporter, clipboard in hand) and I created a fictitious organization with stationary and all to initiate contact with the radio station. They told us it was too late to send us our credentials, but gave us an address in Los Angeles' Benedict Canyon where we might pick them up. I went there pretending to to be my own assistant. It was a nice home in the hills. When they opened the door, an assistant was expecting me and had my credentials ready. Behind him, lounging in the living room were John, Paul, George and Ringo. They nodded at me, acknowledging my presence. George said "Hi." That organization, the Los Angeles Press Association, only existed for me and a few select friends who wanted to scam our way into many venues.

You need to search for those that sell memorabilia. Having the negatives will give you creadance, rather than just a printed image. But take your time....and look worldwide....Collectors live everywhere.

Don't search just for collector's looking for memorabilia...try searching out magazines that use these pictures....such as: Rolling Stone, Guitar.., music magazines....You can usually find the addresses you need right inside the cover pages....it could take some leg-work, but it will be worth it....also check the library for a book called "Photographer's Market"....this book (even out of date books) should have addresses for most magazines relating to this field (Music, Rock-n-Roll, ect.). It will also tell you how and to which department you should send a letter to offering your pictures....

Fabulous. The Fab Four, but you're not trying to exploit them, and the images woudn't damage or embarrass them in any way. It's a very different ethical situation. It was a public situation where they were expecting to be photographed, and I'm fairly sure model releases weren't required.

Why don't you use social media to publish a few low quality images on a Beatles discussion board and see what the reaction is? If people like them, you can get quality prints made, sell them on ebay or similar, even maybe offer the originals if the first run of prints is successful, since you own the rights I expect. You may need to check the legal niceties, but it is an opportunity.

They might have some “historic” value. You never know unless you try. There is a Beatles museum in Liverpool, UK. There is also a museum in London that has Beatles’ memorabilia— items such as a song written on the back of a utility bill envelope. I think it’s called the British Museum...

I would suggest pitching a first-person story and accompanying photos to an LA-based music or feature magazine, and start there. Look at selling the photos later, after you have a published story in hand. It's a wonderful story; one that I would certainly want to read.
