I'll be heading to Ecuador, renting a condo in Puerto Cayo for three month, just south of Manta. Looking for suggestion to experience festivals, cultural events etc. and street photography. Thanks for your suggestions, Alec

Be sure to buy one of those handmade panama hats as they are made there!

Hi Alec, unfortunately I've never been to the coast, but travel regularly to Quito and explore from there. Don't know if you'll have transportation or if there's some sort of bus service from Puerto Cayo. If you like birds, then you have to go to Mindo, which by many is considered the "birding" capitol of the world. I stay at Sachatamia Lodge, very modern and well managed. Here you can get wonderful shots of humming birds, you can walk right up to them and take their picture, absolutely beautiful !!! I'm guessing that Mindo is about a four hour drive, but you will not be disappointed.

They are still expensive - even though they are made there.

Yes, quite expensive here, but a very efficacious product if one has to go out in the sun. I'm assuming they would be much cheaper at the source.

If you get a chance, visit the mausoleum of Presidente Eloy Alfaro, on a hillside just out of Montecristi. He was a radical reformer who established the modern Equator. Quite a structure with gorgeous views from the hilltop. Montecristi itself is quite photogenic and there are a lot of hats made there. About an hour's drive from Puerto Cayo. Catch the beach scene in Manta near the port. And the commercial fishing boats.
