Fo micro a 2.8 setting might give the depth of field the thickness of a sheet of paper. No that good for general use.
The faster a lens is, PT, the better DOF it will give you at intermediate settings. If you stop down too far, diffraction sets in ....
You want a macro to be as fast as possible, in order to give you greater DOF at f8 or f11 ... before problems occur ....
This is why I always recommend the Tamron 60 f2 Macro ... the fastest one you can get ... and the best all-purpose Macro out there ....

In certain situations, you want to have the most light available for macros .... thus, the faster the aperture, the better off you are ....
Chris T, I think you are mistaken that DOF at stopped down apertures depends at all on the maximum aperture. DOF depends only on focal length and lens opening.

Okay ... lens opening, then ... isn't that the same thing as fastest aperture?
