These were shot at different times and different places...

This was shot in the Red Wood forest, Northern California. If you download and turn the picture upside down, you will see a gargoyle face

This stump which I call "The Bear" was photographed in Muir Woods, just north of San Francisco. A year after I shot this picture, i had occasion to go back. It was no longer there.

I really like # 1. I find that very inspirational.
Two very interesting shots. Well seen and executed.

Rich, I like number two. In my mind, I crop away everything around that stump. When I do that I can see some kind of animal.

Hi PixelStan, I do appreciate your looking and commenting. In a way you are right. When I cropped that picture, I felt it took away some of the ambiance that surrounded the stump. So I left it as I photographed it. But, yes, it does point out different animals. I have been told it looks like a bear, dog, and a seal. I was so surprised and disappointed when I went back to photograph it again and found it gone.

It's more dramatic in the b&w format. Great job.

Hi four, I do agree with you, and those are the originals, I did not use color. Thanks for the input. Much appreciated.

I love to take pictures of old stumps, and these are great. One possible suggestion. Would the first one look better if the background were not quite so dark?

Hi allanj, Im so glad you stopped in and looked at the stumps. I would love to see some of your stumps also. In answer to your question, the dark background lends itself to the foreground stump. This way it is more sinister looking...My opinion. But you have a valid suggestion.
