Neither, or at least not until Nikon comes out with a decent mirrorless.

BUt, my favorite is the mirrorless FUJI X cameras, the 21st century Leicas. Two of my friends, one a Nikon guy, the other a Canon shooter, also now have Fuji’s. National Geographic just choose the FUJI XT2 as the best travel camera. They are FUN, with all traditional knobs, aperture rings, etc. Nikon & Canon have their head in the sand. They have huge investments in their manufacturing lines, hence their reluctance to jump on the mirrorless wagon. Why start with older technology. If I spent a day sharing my FUJI’s with the SLR naysayers, most would want to switch (but can’t because of their investment in their respective system). Look at the FUJI Forum before u buy. Best of luck,

I second that. I was a Nikon fanatic since the 70's. Not any more. I have 2 Fujis, and 4 Fuji lenses. Elegant, indestructable, and FUN!

If you think you might want to shoot video, then I recommend Canon. I shoot Nikon for stills, Panasonic for video. I deal with a lot of videographers that use Canon.

Festus, you don't have to be rude (be a smart Alec) in your response to Angelo. Like him (an many others), I had a difficulty, myself, in making up my mind about buying a camera, despite making my own researches and even getting opinions from friends who are in photography. Like many of us, we just need to have some affirmation of our own guts, before making own final decision, since spending $1,500 on a camera is not a joke. If you have no opinion to share, then please refrain from saying anything just for the heck of making a rude statement. Thank you.

I am a pro-video salesman and integration person. I have a lot of customers that use Canon but more and more are going with Sony and Panasonic. Now the ones that have money are not using a DSLR or Mirrorless camera but something like the Sony FS5 or FS7 or Panasonic VX200 (lower cost) or the new Panasonic 5.7K:

Hi, Angelo. Follow what others had suggested--they are the pros. Check all the links of reviews that were sent to you; ask people whom you know who have experienced using both cameras, or even rent both so could see the difference. Both are good cameras-it is just a matter of preference as to which one would work for you. I went through the same situation as you are in now.

Simply, if you have $1500 for a starter, spend $400+ on the Canon G9x Mark ii which will touch most bases for you. It will provide you with a very good quality “starter pocket-type” camera which you can actively learn with. After a while you should know how far down the $$ path to go. Also, it is a camera you will be glad you kept for a lot of reasons down the road; should you decide to go more costly full frame, mirror less, etc. You can also order the Canon (or Sony, Panasonic, etc.) on Amazon or other site and try for 30days before returning if undesirable. BTW, some of the Photo Stores will charge you a re-stocking fee to return...not all Amazon sellers charge this. Also, if you choose International version—may not have a warranty.

...by the way, it took me months to make my own decision, and I ended up buying a Fujifilm X-T2; and I am very happy with it.
Many thanks to those who responded my query her at UHH--they helped me cinch my decision.

That kinda adds new meaning to "not being able to make up ones mind".

Rent and try before you buy. Or, buy from a big box local store and if you don't like it, return it. Or, flip a coin - heads Nikon tails Canon. If the coin lands on edge - Olympus.
Now how is that for expert advice!

Camera make doesn't really matter. I learned on Nikon so I stay with that brand Cannon is just as good. Pick up both and see how they feel in your hands.

Not really! I was just starting out like the OP and I did what I told the OP to do. I did a lot of research and learned about cameras. I knew how to use the camera before I bought it. I never regret my decision. I bought a Nikon F2AS in 1977. I would still use it if someone didn't steal it from me.
I didn't set a budget before hand. I set the budget when I knew how much each camera cost.
