I shift mine from hand to hand. That's all the rigging that I need to,p have it at the ready.

I use a sling by Peak Design. There is no pressure on your neck. When you want to take a shot you just grab it bring it up to your eye focus and shoot. As a by product it is down around belt level and your arm is protecting your camera as you walk.

I carry my camera across my chest and at my side. It’s very easy to keep one hand on it to keep from bouncing, or move out of the way, and to raise quickly into shooting position. I prefer this to a chest strap.

Not sure we know the value of the OP's camera and lens, but let's say it is $1500. Is it any different than hanging a camera and lens worth $7500 off a $75 BlackRapid strap?
I am not disagreeing with you, but it just sort of struck me mathematically. Not picking on you either. I do have a primary and a secondary clip setup on my BlackRapid Sport and Wrist strap though... We can try to mitigate risk. But it always amazes me what things people seem to want to go inexpensive on too.

Take a look at the Blackrapid model RS-4 quick and easy to use, camera sits at the side of your body, out of the way, until your ready to shoot away!

toxdoc, if you are still looking, the pouch that I recommended is only available from Ebay these days. If you are not familiar with Galen Rowell, here is a shot of him and the pouch he designed. It held a camera/lens securely but with very easy access, as you can see. Good luck.

I made my own sling strap(s) before most of the other brands hit the market BTW, out of leather to hold one or two cameras upside down on my sides. Generally everything works very well too!
Note:
As it or they hang, it's possible for some settings to change as the camera(s) rub on the side of my body. (I've learned to check the settings just in case.) I understand that happens on many of the slings on the market too.
