Just starting out, which one, Canon or Nikon?
If you don't know the answer who would? But really if you don't want to research then pick the one that looks good to you. Canon or Nikon? The difference is only skin deep.
You will be using the camera a long time and spending a lot of money. Two things I would recommend: 1) join or go to a club and talk to the members. See what the say and see the type of pictures they take. (Don't get involved with the Canon- Nikon BS). 2) I would go tp a store and handle the cameras you don't buy a car with out a test drive.
AND HAVE FUN
I'm going to echo the advice to look beyond Cnikon's and in to mirrorless systems. My only other advice is make that $1500 go further and buy used from reputable retailers (not eBay).
I use both but have stayed with Canon because that is what I have most of. Both are excellent and will not disappoint. However, as others have mentioned it is a large and varied field. $1,500 will buy you a very good starter system for sure-depending on your needs. I agree with others that the Mirrorless and other point and shoots of today offer a lot for the money. There are many lighter and less complicated systems if you want a light and capable travel camera; many have fast 1.4 - 2.0 lens that meet lots of folks needs. Also, agree to perhaps expand search to Olympus, Pentax, Panasonic, Leica, Sony—take your time. Sony offers great video systems in my opinion but a lot out there. Good Luck !!

I'm a Canon user. I would also look at the Fuji system for image quality, price and performance. I've been researching this system for a lighter travel system.
I would also consider refurbished cameras from the manufacturer websites. I've bought these and they always look brand new and come with a warranty.
Between YOUR choices, you need to go to a reputable camera store, share your thoughts, and put similar camera body models from BOTH brands in your hands. There will be subtle differences, one will fit your hand better.
Since you will be holding your model choice in all kinds of shooting situations, how it feels has got to be a major player in your decision.

1. familiarize yourself with each camera line up
2. handle them at a camera store
3. check out mirrowless
4. look at the glass you will need - at least initially
5. keep in mind you'er buying into a system and it will be pricey to change your mind once committed.
6. both are good - it's a matter of preference.
7. you don't need to spend $1500 initially to get a very good set up

Great suggestion/advice.

Go to a store that carries cameras. Hold them. Get a feel for them. Choose the one that feels the best.

Thank you sir, got a lot of good answers, but so far Canon is winning, $1500.00 is around about, got some good deals on canon EOS 80D, DSLR 18-135mm for $1,299.00 this is a $1,779.99. A Nikon D7200 DSLR 18-55mm and extra len, 70-300mm. This is what I have narrow it down to. Thank you.
Either will be great. Go to a camera store if you have one locally and check each brand out. Hold each to see what feels best. Have a sales person explain the features. Go with with what makes you feel most comfortable. For every person on this site that says go with Canon for whatever reason, others will tell you to go with Nikon, again, for whatever reason. I chose Nikon because that is the brand that I chose many, many years ago and I am comfortable with that brand. Others have done the same with Canon.
Thank you, will keep that in mind.
