I read through the SnapShot thread. The first posts of Swede and nikon123 were not mean, derogatory, or snarky. They stated an opinion of why they did not care for the photos. The Swede wanted the originals so he could compare and further comment on what his suggestions would be to make the photos better in his opinion. It was SnapShot who elevated the rhetoric to an unacceptable level in his replies, rather than responding to the reasons Swede and nikon123 did not understand his work. Was the discourse by SnapShot bad enough to cause someone to leave the UHH? No. However, if SnapShot did not want to see criticism of his work, he should not have started the thread with "Comments Welcome". Obviously, he wanted nice comments only. The original criticisms were not disrespectful. It was his replies that caused the conversation to become deplorable.

I do not post pictures in the galleries. Mainly because I don't have the time to pick out photos I think are worthy and post them, but also, I do not need someone to boost my ego by telling me the photo is great. All that matters to me is if I like the photo. I don't care if you do not like it. Art is truly art in the eye of the beholder, even though the "art people" might tell you differently. I may not like a totally black 6' x 4' canvas hanging in it's own gallery room at the University of Iowa art gallery. But if someone who enjoys it and will pay thousands of dollars for it, what do I care? It is pleasurable to that person and the enjoyment of the art is the truly important objective.

To those people saying "ByeBye" to nikon123, you are putting yourselves in the same vain as SnapShot. It is unnecessary comment. (This is not directed to those who said they are sorry to see nikon123 leave or suggested he/she consider staying. It's for the sarcastic ones.)

I think this thread has outlived its useful life. Hopefully the Admins will lock it soon. The same things are getting said over and over, in slightly different ways.

Most threads have outlived their usefulness after three or four pages. They go away only when people stop posting to them. Even posts like yours only serve to keep them alive longer. Your best option if it bothers you is to stop reading it.

You're implying it had a useful life. Why would you hope an Admin would put an end to it? If people have something to say or add to the conversation then the conversation should go on until there are no more responses, and whose to say this isn't the last response...

Some time ago I was gullible enough to fall for that “Comments welcomed” on one of the photos posted by Snapshot. I pointed out something in the picture which I thought was problematic, an observation subsequently echoed by a few other people. Not only did I get labeled a troll, but Snapshot proudly announced to his worshippers that he had deliberately posted that picture as a “trap” for people like me. I will leave it to those with a background in psychology to make sense of that individual.

We can add to your list of lacks. We all know about your lack of photography skills and now we know about your lack of imagination.

If you could produce a decent shot instead of all this noise, it would be a miracle.

My understanding of a forum is that when you post images you may receive a critique that you don’t agree with. So be it. If you don’t want feedback and if you only want glowing reports on your work, perhaps you should reconsider the decision to post. I will leave this site as I have a very bad taste by a number of immature and insecure people with whom I do not wish to be further involved. Good luck to all of you. To those who were engaged in the name calling and other distasteful comments, shame on you.

One thing I learned here is that if a person posts images and does not state that he is open to critique, your supposed to say nice things about the shots to make him/ her feel good. Some people are new and just need a slap on the back and an attaboy. Nothing wrong with the that.

When I posted some images recently I told people to let me have it and that I could take it. When you ask for people to be brutal they are actually nice instead. (reverse psychology).

Most of all you must realize that no one can insult you unless you let them. You have let your ego get hurt and you chose that. We choose the feelings that we have unless we are in auto pilot. But the body does not control the mind. The mind controls the body. You can control your emotions if you choose.

Look back at my posts. Some people have even cursed me. To the most passionate replies I replied to them that I appreciated that passion and encouraged them to be honest. All of the sudden they changed and became nice and complimented me.

Let me ask you this. Where are you going to go where people are not people? When people know they don't have to face you they will say some mean things. Those people are probably pretty nice to everyone in their life. They are just ordinary folks.

And yes there are some nice people here. Everyone is nice in their own way and if not so what. Find the people who are nice and either turn them around or ignore them

I hope you stay.

This forum is very lightly “moderated” and seeing that you are new, you better get used to it. A very large percentage of the members have this terrible habit of reading only the initial post and of course they all want to put in their 2c worth, even if the issue has been solved at the end of page 1, even though there are 9 additional pages after that. If you want a dictatorship, this is not your type of forum. On the other hand, if you believe in freedom, you can definitely enjoy it on UHH.

If I post a snapshot and you give me a you are not helping me one bit. I’d never learn. So I’m not sure I’d agree with that part off your post. The rest? Yes. However nikon123’s second post in the thread was mean. I may need to reread the thread, but I don’t think nikon123 was treated badly. His 2nd reply was pretty mean. If you can give it, you better be able to take it as well.

So sorry to hear that you are leaving. I have read other "nasty" comments and it is unfortunate that there are those who cannot be constructive and pleasant but rather choose to boost their own ego by putting others down.

The forum should be for everyone from rank beginner to professional/award winning photographers. I regularly learn from those more experienced than I am, but I also learn from those with less experience.

It is a place to learn and share. I am confident that no one posts a question that they feel is "stupid" for the fun of it. People want to learn from those who have more knowledge and not be belittled.

Nikon,

In case you're still here, I have a reaction to your post. Although members post images in the gallery, it seems like almost all want congrats but not anything even the slightest bit negative. I have observed that many images which could only be called average snapshots by any serious photographer get exclusively rave reviews. It can only indicate a very low bar of critical judgment. From the members' point of view I think the image gallery is mostly a place for endless variations of birds and flat landscapes. Not all my images are winners, but I would only post the best of them, and I am a harsh critic of my own work.

I am not criticizing any single person's work here; the value of any art is in the eye of the beholder. Just giving an opinion on the nature of the gallery. Now I'll put on my suit of armor and grab my scimitar to prepare to defend against the scores of angry responses certain to come my way.
Have at it. >>Alan

Couldn't agree more, and I have said so several times weeks and months ago. There are a few members who can be counted on for their snide insults to any newbie's simplistic but genuine question. You know who you are. Why don't you leave this forum, and find 'The Insult Forum,' where you will be among your peers, and you can all trash each other simultaneously. You are providing no value here, and those of us without similar personality defects understand that you are nothing but smug self-important jerkoffs who imagine themselves to possess a unique and pithy wit. Next time, as you are writing one of your insults, imagine thousands of members dismissing you and your supposedly clever remarks as pure stupidity. >Alan
