look into luminancehdr, gimp, and darktable. They are free so it won't hurt you. These are the only programs I use. There ar windowa versions of all these programs.

bmike; I have used open source (Linux) for years and agree that gimp and Darktable are wonderful ... considering he price! I think they can't be beat for the hobbyist. Where did you find Darktable for Windows? I know they have been talking about it for years but can't find it ... thks.

I like On1.

This is why. Image started in Lightroom, then finished using On1.

You be the judge if it is worth it.

In answer to the OP's post - Yes! But also just wanted to say that I'm so impressed with the post processing on this image. Gene - you have mad skills!

These are great for the "push button" photographers who don't wish to learn how to process.

Are these programs worth buying? I'm seeing a lot of pro's using them, and some seem to be too much.

Most digital images need some type of adjustment. Editing programs are necessary and useful. There are many to choose from.

To me, I think the enhanced version is a tad overdone.

Are you looking that the downloaded image, on a color profiled display and a color managed web browser (firefox)? That might make a difference between what I see and what you see. Anyway, the processed version is definitely more saturated, but far closer to what I saw than the straight out of the camera version.

Thanks! But I did have a pretty amazing subject. I've been after that image for the better part of a year. The sun - moon and stars were clearly in alignment on the morning of Nov 1 this year. Oct 30 was not quite as nice. . .

I like the results and would prefer it hanging on my wall rather than the original. But in all honesty I don't recall ever seeing a sky like that in my 75 years on this planet. Maybe image enhancement is a poor choice of words. Perhaps image modification better describes it. Still love it though.

I tend to agree, a tad overdone.

It's his interpretation of the scene. I doubt his adjustments were in error or a careless mistake. The man is a consummate "PRO".
However, you are certainly entitled to your opinion(s).

Thank you, Mark. Bottom line those that are having issues with the saturation intensity are probably looking at the images with uncalibrated and not color managed equipment. The images look fine to me and in print. Looking at an image on UHH and passing judgement is hardly accurate or definitive. Like I always say, different strokes . . .

My pleasure, Gene. I have never seen written expression or images of yours that are anything but the highest quality. I'm a bit jealous. LOL
Happy Thanksgiving!
