Not spring beauties, although they are definitely around in March (found one!). I think the ones in the tiny vase were a mix of light and dark bluets, tiny violets, and hoary bittercress.

Nice Beauties, I guess I saw the shape of the bloom with thin veins through it and thought it might be a Spring Beauty, sorta looked like one, but I couldn't really tell, thanks for clarifying.

We bought some property last year that is heavily wooded and filled with granite boulders (this is New England after all) and many of the old trees that tried to grow on top of the granite ledges have been blown over to reveal their root systems which had grown out flat over the granite and now that they are exposed have developed into small ecosystems of moss ferns and fungi. The tree in this posting is facing a direction which keeps the underneath of the root system in the shad all day. The sun never reaches it. Although we will be clearing the actual tree I am going to leave this overturned root system as it is.

Lots of nice ones Karen. I like the last one the best. It reminds me of a bonsai.
