Thanks, Angela, and on the wisteria I can sympathize with you guys as I have gone through the same thing twice, the last time being about a month ago and I worked for about three days and even then didn't probably manage to remove all the runners but removed about a pickup truck load even after coiling them up to conserve space. My ex neighbor thought that he had eliminated it more than ten years ago and this is the third time around for me! This time I drilled many small holes into the medium tree stumps and filled them with full strength roundup as was suggested on it's label, but know that there are many small plants that have sprouted up, and will have to check and spray several times a month during the growing season with the normal diluted solution---I think! I Know that I heaved and pulled in uprooting runners at least forty feet long and suspect that was really the cause of my leg injury. We recently received a 2018 calendar from the Paralyzed Veterans of America featuring information from The Old Farmer's Almanac offering some more suitable forms and was intending to send you a copy of that section but can't get the *#*# printer to recognize the computer so will take a whack at typing some of it's comments: "WISTERIA WISE----Wisteria has enchanted gardeners for centuries with it's dramatic clusters of flowers in blue, pink, purple, and white. Unfortunately, the lovely Chinese and Japanese forms (Wisteria sinensis, W. floribunda) are also weedy and destructive. As an alternative, consider growing less-invasive natives, such as American wisteria (Wisteria frutescens, shown). This high-climbing and fragrant vine blooms from April to May. Its counterclockwise growing habit creates interest in the garden with its thick and twisted woody vines. Train vines to grow on a freestanding arbor. pergola, post, trellis, fence or terrace wall." With all that said I don't think that I will ever plant any kind, Angela! Will send you the image of the American one separately as I haven't downloaded the image yet and am afraid that I will lose this message if I attempt to include it now!
Thanks, Angela, and on the wisteria I can sympathi... (show quote)

OH MY... so you do no how we feel!! I've always loved wisteria and if I only knew then what I know now... I'll never plant any variety ever again!! When my neighbor planted the bamboo and every day David and I would pull out roots forever in fear it would go through my pond, we cursed every minute... but at least the bamboo was easier to deal with than wisteria!! I know there are roots down deep and we'll be dealing with this mess for years to come.... When we had it cut down with the maple, David did drill holes in the stump and poured in stump killer, he axed it away yesterday and it did rot, but not before sending off roots after roots... ugh!!
Take care, Corky and don't work too hard... and I hope you leg is feeling better, along with your back!!!

I think the only way to eliminate it is to constantly check for new growth, and I'm not very good at doing that, but will try to as I'm mowing the grass. I really detest even being around the poisons, but better that, than going through another three days of torture! PS My leg is still a little sore but much improved. Thanks, and take care!

Corky, when we were dealing with the bamboo... we injected poison right into the stalk... and since it invaded my garden and even pet cemetery, that is the reason I have to plant everything, even my veggies, in pots. We used to throw the course salt on the ground as well, to kill it...

I'm with you on this wisteria hunt, take care and rest your leg and I hope it continues to improve!!

I read your and Corky's rants about Wisteria. Corky had me fully convinced to stay away, far, far away from Wisteria. Then he threw in that bit about American Wisteria. Sigh. I have a long history of only learning from my own mistakes and even then I often have to repeat the mistakes before learning. Oh, dear. I feel a potential mistake coming on. How many years before you regretted the wisteria? Maybe I won't live that long. Something to leave for my heirs to remember me by.

Gosh.... maybe 8 years. It continued to grow up my beautiful maple and finally when it reached the top we noticed a few flowers, but couldn't enjoy them. Then it killed my tree and I knew then it was a big mistake.... if I only knew then what I know now... same with Corky, he hurt his leg from digging and pulling and I had to listen to David cursing and cursing... so I hope you don't make this mistake. The only thing I might recommend is get the American variety, which I had no idea existed, but keep it planted in a large pot so the roots are contained, just beware of those seeds that fall and take off on their own!
