Although not a direct photography-related issue, I have read that Microsoft Office 2011 may have some issues. I know I should think of upgrading that since MS is no longer supporting that version, but I am reluctant to move the OS to High Sierra at this time. It has also frequently been suggested that non-geeks wait until Apple releases "dot" upgrade versions like 10.13.1 or 10.13.2 before upgrading.

The current release is 10.13.1.

Re: MS Office (2011) vs Apple software, Excel far outperforms Numbers, and Word is much better than Pages (my opinion, of course). It almost looks to me like a software maturing process, with Apple software still being a teenager. I say this despite being fully Apple-ized: two 27" iMacs, second 27" screen, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iPad 2 Air, and two iPhones. I like the way all systems just work together so seamlessly and reliably. Yes, initial sticker shock, but no regrets once the money is spent.

Oh, one more Apple quibble -- I really want to be able to access my files via filenames, so I refuse to use Photos. I store all my images using the Finder. If I ever decide to use Photos I will still keep all my images (as backup, I suppose) using my own filing system. I think I read the Photos may soon have filename handling capability, which I would really welcome.

BTW, the Apple Automator is really great for moving, copying, and managing images via filename. In fact, I use it to modify filenames in a bulk-like manner.

I use the Apple versions of Office software all the time for my Macs. It is better than the MS version that I had to use on PCs years ago. I use Photos for ordering Apple Photo Books. For every vacation, holiday, family event, etc, I always get an Apple Photo Book. The program is very easy to use and the books are inexpensive for the quality that you get with them, averaging $25-$30. I like these much better than prints in a 3-ring binder of plastic pages. Give Photos a try and see if you like the Books.

I've had no problems with Office on my Macs since any upgrade. There is a recurring problem with "Excel quitting unexpectedly" every time I quit, but I just continue to send the reports to Apple.

I'm not sure it is fair to compare current Apple or MS office software to MS versions for PCs years ago. I use both families of Office products, but as I said before, the Apple products are still in their teens compared to MS Office... in my opinion.

I have given iPhoto and Photos a serious try but don't happen to like them. My biggest beef is that I can't access my files by filename in those products. Many folks on UHH have beaten me up over this, saying I should be using keywords to "label" my images. Well, I prefer to put the descriptors into the filename... thank you very much. That way I can find what I am looking for without resorting to ANY photo file manager; I simply do it from the Finder. And those files can also be located, identified and accessed by a Windows computer at any time as well right from the file manager. I just like to be in charge of my images. I want the computer to be a slave to me, not the other way around.

As for photo books, great idea. I have used Snapfish in the past. But again, I don't let the software create my book; rather, I do it myself. The auto-create is often impressive, but you can do so much more if you take the time to present your images in the way you want.

The only use that I have for Photos is the Books. I just import only the photos into Photos that I intend to use as a book; thus I don't have any filename issues because I still use LR for processing images. I have 100% control over the way that the pages look. The software only loads a suggested design and then you can change each page to look just as you want--layouts including backgrounds and page colors, etc. Do try it. I liked it better than Snapfish.

No problem here, but I have a Late 2015 iMac desktop so I didn't expect any issues. Same thing with my wife's new MacBook Pro - no problems.

Be very careful upgrading your old Mac to the latest operating systems. Always check the hardware requirements of your model. My Mac pro late 2009 will not run High Sierra. I could upgrade from mavericks to el capitan but i'm running a very stable machine on all of the software that I want to use.

The link shows which Mac models can run it. My old Mini from Mid-2010 is at the bottom of the pile, and it runs High Sierra just fine.

Hi Bill,

Do you know if there is a website that shows compatibility of past versions of MS Office for Mac and High Sierra? I currently have Office 2008 and have no desire to upgrade.

I think 10.6.8 was the last OS I used with that. I think Office 2011 ran fine until 10.13. I still have it on one startup drive running 10.10.5.

I am running 10.12.6 and MS Office 2011 works fine. I think this is the latest OS before High Sierra.

Updated to High Sierra the other night and everything runs fine with Adobe Creative Cloud.
