At a small gathering at the airport, I was trying to find a friend that wanted to share e-mails. I spotted her husband and asked where she was, he pointed up. Fortunately the camera was set up and I caught them turning from base to final. Of course I e-mailed her the picture.

Super perspective and the perfect moment. The bright red against the clouds is so eye-catching.

Exif is not showing; what was shutter speed? I only ask because of a recent topic on shooting to get motion in the propeller.

I usually shoot landings Linda @ 1/320 sec. Over the years I have learned to adjust the prop blur so that an experienced pilot will know if the throttle is open or closed. Open, or full throttle will be acceptable (usually @ 1/400 sec.). Some like it really blurred, but on landing it just doesn't look right to a pilot. Also shutter speed has to be adjusted according to the engine, rpm's vary!

Thanks for those kind words my friend!

Nice photo--even better if it’s of a friend.

Phil,
Great shot. 60 years ago, when I was 12 or 13 and in the Meriden, Ct. Civil Air Patrol Squadron, my friend and I had our very first flight ever, in a Waco. Since we were small, pilot put us both in the front seat. Biggest thrill of my life. So glad you captured the one in the picture.

I agree John, she is a tiny lady with a big heart and she was delighted with the pictures. That made it worthwhile for me!

What a great story, and a wonderful memory, thank you for sharing. There is a beauty and warmth in these classic old birds, their magical sound and beauty are worth preserving.

Boy does your photo bring back some memories. Some years ago a co-worker asked my wife and I if we wanted to go flying with him?

He fly's a 1940 Waco. His plane was a military trainer back in its day. He is also a stunt pilot.

We thought we were going on a nice Sunday morning flight up the Columbia George. Wrong! He took that plane through his routine. Holy ....!!!

Fortunately a friend was there filming it. No one would believe what we/he did if they didn't see it. Thanks for posting. This is awesome.

Man, that is a memory, I can't thank you enough for sharing it. I hang out at the local airport where they have restored more than a few Waco's, many of them winning top honors at Oshkosh. Many stories like yours are shared on a weekly basis, better than Television! Thanks again!

Oh yes, that was better than a A ticket at Disneyland.

I really enjoy seeing the old stuff restored. I am retired so to fill my time helping restore old military equipment at our local Army museum/army base. Tanks, howitzers, jeeps

and so on. I thought when I got out of the service I'd never go near a Army base again. What's the saying, "never say never".

Great timing and perspective Phil, the grey clouds make the red really stand out! Excellent shot.
