I have been taking pictures since the 60's my first good camera was a Pentax 35mm. I used it all over Europe when I
was in the Air Force. I bought a 2x extender to help my 105mm lens bring things a little close. I actually used it more for
a close up lens, I thought it worked better for that. About 10 years ago I upgraded to a Pentax K2000. I was pretty happy
with that but I thought my old 35mm actually did a better job. About 3 weeks ago I upgraded again to a Nikon D5600
and love this camera, the pictures are great. I travel out west frequently and would like to have a telephoto lens of
about 500 - 600mm. They are pretty pricy $1300 - 3000. I'm not a professional and take pictures as a hobby. I have
been looking at teleconverters. I see that Nikon has a Nikon AFN-S Teleconverter TC-14E III 1.4. That would bring my
300mm to the equivalent of 420mm. Has anyone used a teleconverter? My main problem with my old 2x was that things
were a little grainy. Right now I'm just investigating my options. I would appreciate any feedback before I go further
with this. Thanks

My experience it that a 1.4 works satisfactorily with prime lens. The 2 will work with a fast lens, f4 or faster. You loose two stops with 2 plus some image quality. My experience is with Canon but from I have read the results are similar with other brands, I use 1.4 with good results with my prime lens and my on 70 200 mm L lens and 100 macro and 300 f4. with satisfactory results.

Welcome! Looking forward to your posts and pictures. Happy shooting!

I have a Sigma 150-600 and love it. Worth the money if you need the extra distance in a lens.

If you decide the bite the bullet, and go with a big lens, really consider the Nikon 200-500 f5.6 lens. With your D5600, it will give you excellent photos. Plus, if you ever decide to go full frame (which I bet you will!), the 200-500 is for a full frame camera also. It is an awesome lens, well worth the $1300.00 plus you will pay for it. If you can find one, a used or refurbished will cost less, but they are hard to find used.

Consider the Kenko 1.4TC. I've used it on my Nikon 28-300mm, and the results have been good. Just be prepared for getting less light through the lens. It's cerainly a lot cheaper ($150) than a new lens. Try it, and if it's no good for your purposes, return it.

You could also look for a good used lens on ebay or KEH.

I have been considering the same and use a Nikon D7200. Due to the loss of light when using teleconverters I am just saving money and will go to the Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD.
This lens will give you all the performance you need with 22* telephoto. It can be used as a general purpose lens do is a perfect all round choice for someone that travels as it means you do not have to carry multiple lens.

Sorry I should have included more info about my 300 lens, but my chat was pretty long
and I didn't want to make it longer. It is a Nikon AF-PNikor 70-300mm1:4.6-6.3ED.

My longest lens is a AFS 300mm f/4 and I use it sometimes with a Nikon TC17EII. I have no problem with the max aperture of f/6.7 and the increase in focal length to 500mm is great. On a DX body, the lens + TC would be an effective focal length of 750mm. IQ is great and just need a bit of sharpening in PP. I also use the TC sometimes on my AFS 70-200mm f/2.8G VRII and on this lens the IQ is perfect with the TC and no sharpening in PP is needed.

Your camera has a crop sensor so the 300mm is equivalent to 450mm.

TCs work best with fast (2.8) long lenses. 1.4X are the best of the group but still they have a negative impact on image quality and on focus. Many including myself avoid them.

You may want to look at the new 3rd party 100-400 lenses by Sigma and Tamron. On your camera they will equate to 150-600mm and cost a little more than 1/2 of the longer lenses and are much lighter and therefore more manageable.

Before you buy the teleconverter, download the manual for it and make sure it will work with the lens you have. Just because it is a Nikon TC does not mean it will work with your lens. I learned the hard way about that. Luckily, B & H refunded my money quickly.

I had a Canon 1.4 and a 2x. Hated both of them. IQ suffers with them. Sold both.
