The longer the lens ( especially Zooms), the more useful the dock will be....

It's firmware, not filmware. Used to update cameras and lenses.

ok, spelled it wrong, but still what does it do to a lens. a camera I can understand, but a lens? does it make the os or focusing better?

Depends on what the update is for. Lenses are electronic devices with processors.
