Sirui makes some nice stuff for the price. I have one of their K-40 ball heads for sale on eBay right now as well as a Gitzo monopod. Time to clear out some duplicate items and get something else...

Best,
Todd Ferguson

I use my mono-pod with lens and camera attached while walking with the heavy lens carry strap around my neck (no camera strap) and the mono-pod slung across my shoulder. I use the https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1182201-REG/sirui_bsrl20s_l_20s_2_way_pan_tilt_head.html mono-pod head which is overrated at 55 LB load capacity (by overrated I mean a 55 LB load capacity head on a 26 LB load capacity mono-pod).

I use a RRS MC-34 with a RRS MH-02 head. Expensive, but a really fine piece. Check out the RRS web site for info on purchasing monopods or tripods. Best of luck.

Yes, RRS website has some interesting information besides many interesting pieces of gear. I use one of their short tripod bags for storage and transport of my monopod and tilt head. Very nice bags.

I have not found anything from RRS that I don't like... I have accumulated a fair amount of RRS gear in the past few years... I also like their military grade Quick Release snap which I use with my L plates and BlackRapid straps.

Best,
Todd Ferguson

I like their stuff because it's hard to upgrade!

Would love to hear from those that use a Monopod along with a heavy lens. I'm using a Canon ef 500mm F4 as well just picked up a Sigma 120-300 f2.8 (just as heavy as the Canon). Not sure my ultra light mono will do the trick. I would like to hear what model/brand your using and with or without a head. I have a pistol grip now and love it, but don't think it will hold this weight. Thanks in advance for any feedback (photos would be great as well.)

I would not use a monopod that isn't rated for the weight of the total combined weight of your lens and camera "times 2". That is an expensive lens ($7000-$10,000) that you don't want to see fall. You don't want a pistol grip on your monopod either.

I also often have a wrist strap attached to the L plate of the camera on a monopod and the monopod strap around my wrist. This gives me a shot at making a save if something unexpected happens. Which can happen when you are on the sidelines of sports or trackside at the drag races...

Todd Ferguson

Well, that is the first thing to watch for when buying a tripod or monopod, is the specs for how much weight it will hold without a problem! So you should know for sure, if your monopod will be able to do that or not!

I would suggest a sturdy tripod, and a gimbal head

That could cost twice what a monopod and tilt head might. Could work very well, but it is also more to transport around.

Best,
Todd Ferguson

I use the Sirui P-204-C Monopod and the Sirui L-10 tilt head with a D810 and Sigma 150-600 Sport. No problems holding that combo.

That is my preference, but often tripods are not allowed and monopods are.

I use a Manfrotto 681 monopod with a 3262 Manfrotto ball head with my 7D and a 100-300mm canon lens. Both from ebay for less than $150.00. Works very well for me.
