The beach in the summer on the west coast often leaves something to be desired. In the words of Mark Twain " The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco. These were shot yesterday off Santa Cruz. Hope you enjoy as I rarely see offshore pictures on UHH

Wow awesome shots.. Oh and I can confirm the weather report.. It is often the same for the North Oregon coast.. The hotter it is inland, the more likely it will be 60 degrees and foggy on the beach..

GREAT shots! It doesn't happen often when you are in the right place at the right time.

It doesn't happen as often as I'd like. Its routine to have whales transit the area within sight of land as the Grey whales travel from their summer home in the gulf of Alaska to the winter mating/feeding areas in Mexico. An occasional pod of ORCA makes the news about once a year. I guess global warming has become a friend of mine as this year has been great for viewing Humpbacks and Blue whales within sight of land.

Hers a couple more for those who would like to see a blue whale and a leather back turtle who swam over from Indonesian on his migration. Very rare and endangered.

Needless to say....yesterday was a great day to have a camera except capturing grey on grey water with a grey sky. I partial to blues.

OK Capt, can I ask what you were shooting and where exactly you were in relation to these beauties? Envious.. We actually had Orca sightings in both Tillamook and Nehalem bays a few weeks ago. Not by me unfortunately..

Shooting Nikon D7000 w/ 700-200 2.8 hand held at the margins with post and some cropping done in LR4.

I was in a boat less than a mile off shore on a whim to see if any whales were about. The humpback jumped twice about 20 minutes apart and only caught the splash the first time but once we knew he was about I tried to be ready for the second occurence. Just got lucky. Was a great day between the Humpys and the Blue whales we also saw all the regulars. Sea Otters, sea lions, Harbor seals, and several types of jelly fish.

Oh just so yu know....whales have fish breath....needs oceans of mouthwash!

Very nicely done. Would love to see that live. You handled that lens quite well.
