Trust me. You do not want a ball head with a 500mm f4 lens attached. I've seen so many of them flop over on a ball head it isn't funny. For nature photography you must use some sort of gimbal head for a long lens. There are other variations, but the 3 I showed links to are the most commonly used (that I've seen).
