I have it and previously used it with a 7D and now with a 7D ii. Excellent lens. I have used it with an extender and got very good photos with it but under some conditions got CA.

Had that lens and used it with 1.4 teleconverter for wildlife. Got very sharp pictures. It's a popular combination for bird photography. I sold it and bought the 100-400 II lens. Being in Florida, where there are lots of big birds around, I find that I have to zoom down on occasion.

Hi Gary,
I had the 300 f4 for about 3 months. It just doesn't have the reach for wildlife I wanted.
Maybe look at the 100-400L I IS which is about the same price or the 400 f5.6L along with a macro lens combo, which might cost a little more.
I went with the 400 f5.6 L and then got the 500 f4 IS for wildlife.
Maybe try renting to get a feel for it/them.
Hope this helps.

I use that lens with a 7d and 1x4 converter and it works great for bird photography. And it is easily carried around for extended periods.

Hi Randy,
I've went through the Canon Mk I and II converters (along with others) and have never been happy with sharpness or performance.
I'm glad you're happy with your results, but to OP may not be.
Right now I use the 400L for BIF, just for sharpness, and the 500L for most other wildlife.
I have the 100-400L II on my 5DII for everything else in the field.
Just trying to save him some money that I wish I had done.

I have used this lens and am very satisfied. I'm also very picky. Use it with 1.4xii with total satisfaction. 2xii not! On a 60D body.

It's interesting, this lens for some reason gets little press. I am a Nikon guy though and through, not going to change. BUT, a guy I shoot with in Florida bought this lens as soon as it came out, has it on a crop sensor Canon, WOW. Wish Nikon make one.

One of Nikon's great downfalls - they have never had a reasonably affordable AF 400mm prime lens .....

I always thought Nikon made a mistake when they came out with the (only) 300mm diffraction lens ...

FWIW, the non-IS version is popularly thought to be sharper than the IS version ......see the Photozone reviews .....

I own both, this was taken this summer, in Estes Park Colorado. A 1Ds and a non IS 300 mm L. Probably 200 yards away. Hand held. Straight out of the camera
