I've put arca Swiss type heads on all my tripods(3) and monopod . . . The monopod has a tilt head and the tripods have ball heads. All my equipment has arca Swiss plates attached. I even have arca Swiss plates on my 2 speedlights so I can use a tripod as a light stand. The heavy duty tripod has a large ball head to accommodate my Wimberley Sidekick.

I use Arca Swiss QR throughout all my equipment, most of which is RRS. Works well for me an quite flexible.

I use a QR plate on all my devices. It seems trying to limit it just to the tripod doesn't work since the camera goes on both the mono- and tri-. A few extra bucks for more plates is worth it in convenience.

Or is the lesser monopod, where it screws into the camera's tripod connection, sufficient for most. Just looking to see how the majority of you feel about this.

Thanks.

For BEST performance ( speed, accuracy, ergonomics, and convenience) - especially with longer lenses, you WILL need a QR system AND a tilt head on a monopod !

I am now using a QR system for my heads as well as my cameras/lenses - so I can switch heads among several bodypods, monopods and tripods.

I would agree. I use the RRS monopod head with RRS plates/feet on bodies/lenses. I don't switch heads as I really don't have the time to do that so everything has it's own. Switching will save you money as needed.

It is extremely awkward to carry a camera in some situations with a monopod attached. Stopping to screw on the camera is a nuisance and may cause lost photo opportunities.

Best option is a tilt head with QR. Not much more cost that just a QR plate.

True, unless yours is made by RRS. You do get what you pay for with RRS. I highly recommend them, FWIW!

I happen to have a Canon Monopod 100. It has a tilt option, but no place for a QR plate. Unfortunately I can't see how I could remove the stock head in order to replace it with a QR receiver unit, if such a unit could even be had. My tripod is a Velbon and I can get additional QR plates for it, so that I can place them on my other camera bodies. I like my monopod, and would rather not have to invest in another one...if only I could make it work with the same QR plate as with my Velbon T-pod..

You can purchase QR mounts from RRS and other knock-offs on eBay that can possibly be mounted on your monopod. Tilt head is very handy to have on a monopod but not mandatory. Give RRS a call and discuss your needs...and see what they suggest. Or sift through their website...

Best,
Todd Ferguson

I use RRS ballheads and clamps on my monopod and tripods, and have RRS L-Plates on my camera bodies. Strong and secure attachments, easy and quick to use, and never had a problem. Wouldn’t think of using a monopod without a head, clamp, and QR plate.
