I am travelling to Thailand shortly and was told by a friend I could purchase lens there for less than in the states. I just purchased an Olympus OM-D EM10 Mark lll. a) is it correct lenses are less expensI've and b) which lenses would you recommend? I currently have the kit lens 14-42. I was a working photographer back in the day and have rediscovered my passion for photography. This time for pleasure and travel.

I am not an Olympus user, so cannot recommend any particular lens. I did spend a month in Thailand a couple of years ago and while there visited a couple of camera stores. There was a slight difference in price, but not enough to cause me to make a lens purchase outside the US. Lots to photograph, you will love the people.

You'll pay customs on them when you return to U. S. The other factor to consider is if you need service on a lens purchased in a foreign country, the official U. S. importer will refuse to provide warranty service.

Buying overseas often sounds better than it actually is.

My observations on prices in general, except for cheap knock-offs was that any name brands made in Thailand we very close to USA pricing on the street, no great price advantages, anything imported from anyother country seemed to be quite expensive due to their high import taxes. Observations are from My last trip to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai that was 2 years ago, won't be returning till Dec.

I lived in Thailand from 2004 to 2014 and generally camera gear and electronics are actually more expensive there as there is a high import duty in Thailand for anything not made there. If you find a deal it could be a copy. Also anything you buy there will not be the U.S. model (if there are two) and the U.S. warranty will not apply. Even when I lived there I purchased camera equipment on the internet from a company like B&H and had a friend or family member send it to me.

I lived in Chaing Mai for a year..... Imported stuff is not cheaper.....buy your camera stuff here. I don't believe it will be warranted if you buy there. Thailand is a beautiful country.... Especially the smaller towns...... Bangkok is ok and Chaing Mai great....if you get to Chaing Mai, travel to the smaller towns for the best photos and to buy. You should only buy things made there. Chaing Mai also has some of the best Taylor's in the world for men's clothing custom made, cheap. I lived like a king on $500 a month when I was there.....

Good luck........

Get some wider lens to bring along with your 14-42. My experience from travelling is that I use wider lenses more than longer lenses.

I travel across Thailand every couple of years and shop for Canon products and not found any deals better than Amazon or eBay. Just saying. Enjoy Thailand, try to get up north around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, much prettier country in my opinion.

Good choice, I hope the weather is good, it should be this time of year. Enjoy the night market and try to get out to see the long necks. :-)
