Just went to open my Lightroom Classic CC, which I just installed 2 days ago, and there is already an update.
Just timing. Only get a few update a year.

Any new software package will have bugs that get squashed in the first few days after release.

Not necessarily relevant - being new to you doesn't make it newly released.
OP would have seen exactly same thing if software had been released on 10/26/2016, and was scheduled to receive just one update each year, on Oct 26th of the year.
What is wrong with that? This happens all the time.
Not normally the next day though.

I can absolutely guarantee that Adobe set the release date for the next update without giving the SLIGHTEST thought to when some individual customer might decide to install the program.

That's just the way it is. I'm always surprised when I download a program, and it wants to do an update as soon as I start it. I would think the download would be the latest version.
I'm guessing that from a web site maintenance standpoint it's easier to load the original package in the "Downloads" section, leave it alone until the next major Version is produced, and then replace it. Anybody who downloads between major versions gets 1.0 as a download and then goes through the "usual" update process go get all the current fixes.
That's what I saw when I upgraded my standalone LR5 to standalone LR6 a few months ago. I got a download of 6.0 or 6.1, and upon checking for updates (as I was prompted when I first ran the new software) I got 6.12 as the then current version. (The original download would not read Lumix GX85 raw files, which was the reason I upgraded from LR5. But 6.12 did, so all is well - until the next new camera, of course.)
