Rules are meant to be broken! No wonder everyone says 'English' is such a hard language.
I remember the rule being "i before e, except after c and sometimes w"
But the coffee cup shows that it should be "except after c and sometimes w, r, n, k, f, b, l, (LOL)

Logic and the English language are seldom on speaking terms! " Ghoti" can be pronounced as "fish", for example. And yet most people think math is hard! 😉
