When I started in photography, there were Ansel Adams books and now there is this site and all of you experts, which I appreciate very much!!! Thank you all!!!
I have been trying to get started in digital and was so excited reading of shooting in the raw and using "Lightroom4" for editing. So I purchased the software loaded it on my computer, found it to be very complicated, so looked for the user manual and it was nowhere to be found, I've been looking it over for a couple of days now and have no idea what to do next. Can one of you tell me where I can get a user manual or something to guide me through this? Thanking you in advance, Fred

The User Manual is actually online and can be accessed directly from LR. Click on Help at the top of the page and then Lightroom Help from the dropdown menu.
Better yet, there are tons of videos available online that can teach you how to use this software. One of the best is by Adobe at
http://tv.adobe.com/watch/adobe-evangelists-julieanne-kost/lightroom-4-importing-and-organizing-your-images/This is one of the first of a long series of videos teaching you how to use LR.
There are tons more available online by Scott Kelby, Matt Kloskowski and others.
Lightroom has a bit of a learning curve but is not as difficult as Photoshop by a long shot. Many of the things you can do in LR will become second nature pretty quickly. Don't get distressed, call on us if you need help.
I'm new to Lightroom 4 also. You Tube has been a big help for me. I also but the book Lightroom 4 but found it not easy to use.

I have just bought the George Jardine Adobe Lightroom 4 Develop Tutorial Videos. This cost me $25US and is a superb teaching aid for lightroom- There are 18 videos of the Develop module in this series varying from around 12 minutes to about 30 mins. they are well produced and he has a great presenting style. I think this is the best $25 I have spent in ages. He goes through every module in the lightroom "tool box" and shows who they work by editing his own photos. He also does a similar series on the library module, which I'll probably get next.
I highly recommend this series.
Birdpix is also an excellent resource with many useful tips on lightroom 4 on his homepage
I recommend Nat Coalson's book on LR 4 available from Amazon. it will guide thought all the workflows
Lightroom 4: Streamlining Your Digital Photography Process (Adobe Photoshop)

Does/can Lightroom 4 install/use by itself or does it work with Photoshop as add-on only?
