The version that is free when you purchase a Sony camera is a 'light' version, not the full featured version. It's not bad, but a purchase is necessary to get all the excellent features.

The good thing about buying is that you only need to upgrade every two pr three years. That's a lot cheaper than the monthly price.

Actually, that's a myth. If you do the math, the monthly subscription is generally no more expensive than a purchase when you consider the extra expenses of upgrading periodically. Of course there are exceptions with certain software manufacturers that don't update often, but those ARE the exceptions.

Not a myth. Do the math.

Capture One upgrade for $99 every two years is less than one fourth of the cost of an annual subscription. Even if you upgrade every year, it's less than half the cost.

Cool, if you want to wait 12/24 months for upgrades.....

My frustration with Adobe (Elements & Lightroom) when they went to the monthly rental plan, led me to try other editing programs that might be available for a stand-alone application. On1 Photo RAW was introducing it's 2017 program that seemed to offer a lot of promise, so I opted for it. It has been a frustrating year as they continually fought several instability problems that caused the program to freeze up, but I hesitated throwing it out as it had a lot of hope with tons of tutorial videos and response from actual techs.

They're about to introduce the 2018 version as I'm presently evaluating a Beta copy and so far, many (but not all) of the problems have been addressed. They offer a thirty day trial of a slightly stripped down version that contains all of the standard, non-destructive editing features including layers and an exciting resize module. The photos can be clicked on from your usual browse, whether in Windows or Apple, and does not need to be imported from a catalog. The final version, soon to be introduced, will have a Panorama, HDR module along all the bells & whistles you'll ever need. The program's going to need a fast GPU like those found in gaming computers to make it show off it's full potential.

I'm going to purchase the newer version ($79.99 upgrade, $99.99 full price) and say farewell to Adobe.

My frustration with Adobe (Elements & Lightroo... (show quote)

Elements did not go to subscription. It catalogs much the way Lightroom does.

Having been in the software development business for four decades, I know the difference between an update and an upgrade.

You get Capture One updates and fixes for the current release free on a regular basis. These are pretty much worked out during the first year.

The upgrades only come out about once per year. You can review the list of new features when that happens and decide whether to upgrade or not. Even if you upgrade annually, $99 to upgrade is cheaper than $20/month.

Nobody is forcing you to install new features that you may not need and risk the problems associated with installing something that was not field tested by ordinary users.

The difference is that you can skip the catalog and go directly to the editor.

Just create a shortcut that points to ""C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Elements nn Organizer\Photoshop Elements nn.0.exe" That gets you past the organizer so you can open and save a file directly without messing with the catalog.

I don't think you can do that with Lightroom.

The splash screen, while requiring one more click, is pretty convenient.

Lightzone is an open source "free" alternative. Also GIMP but it has a very steep learning curve, also open source.

I also use these two programs along with Smart Photo Editor and they do a great job.

So do I. Downloaded the new versions, Lightroom Classic and Photoshop 2018 with no problems. Up and running. All catalogs and add ons still there, (except Nik which I hardly ever use). Both the Lightroom and Photoshop have some neat new features. For instance, Photoshop has the curve pen and some new brush features

I use Lightroom, Photoshop, and Bridge. It works, more features than I will ever use. No reason to take time to try something else that someone thinks is better.

LightRoom CC continues to be my go to for cropping and for camera and lens adjustments and I use the LightRoom and Photoshop Apps on my iPhone 7 Plus when traveling after uploading my photos from their SD card. I prefer to use a separate desktop file to move my photos from LR on the Mac for emailing and other catalog needs. I use the Photos App for cataloging on the iPhone. This convoluted system works best for me because I truly believe that the more time I spend behind the lens using manual settings in the field, the less time I will spend processing photos inside ...

Just moved from Lightroom 6 to Capture One Pro (Sony) $50.00 and liking it....different features but learning curve is fast and has a few other options I like (cataloging & sessions). My 2 cents

Lightroom is easy to use and understand. The editing features are endless. Why go anywhere else.

Yes, I am beginning to believe that.
