Mucho thanks to all whom have posted comments on my Grackle series of pics. All are truly appreciated. And yes Ellielady, even though there is some beauty about these birds, after years of seeing the damage these birds can do to many songbirds I feel little sorrow if one would "pass away". Too many Robins eggs destroyed and fledglings killed in my humble opinion.

Not at all. Defending the little guys.

It seemed as if you would be aiming your pellet gun at the birds - - did I misunderstand you ???

Please, let's not get carried away with the pellet gun post. Firstly, this bird CANNOT be killed legally. Even though it is obnoxious and a total pest, both to birders and also people like farmers (destruction of crops) it is protected totally under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act both in the United States and here in Canada. There are serious problems for anybody hurting them, their fledglings and even their eggs. There are basically only three birds that can be legally put down at any time of the year, these being the European Starling, the House Sparrow and the Rock Dove (Feral Pigeon). These three birds are not native species but rather imports years ago from Europe. The rest of birds native to North America are protected under the act except by some special circumstances, usually decided upon by our governments.
Secondly, your chances of hitting one of these characters is in my opinion slim to none. They are one of the smartest of the smart and they disappear quite quickly if the even sense danger. I know, it takes all I can to get a fair photo of them before they skidaddle. Due to the fact they are constantly being chased by us humans they tend to not trust us, especially to get close enough to harm them.
So, enough please, on this post of pellet guns or such. Let's just watch and admire one of the Lord's creations for what he looks like, not what he is, even if he is dang pest. All of our nature, be it the good, the bad or the ugly, should be always protected for our children's future. All were put on this earth for a purpose.

They strut across the yard, resplendent in their regal purple robes, reminding us of a King or Prince from earlier times. But in reality they are thugs, bullies, destroyers of other birds eggs, and the killers of baby songbirds. They are in some respects the "Hells Angels" of the birding kingdom.
They arrive in flocks and within a very short time eat everything in sight including all that is animal, vegetable and sometimes I think, mineral. If it isn't nailed down it's gone. They are in all aspects a true nemesis for those whom watch and feed the birds.
They may look purty, but for the most parts they are a pest, and not welcome, especially to my yard.
I've also included a few pics of one of his distant cousins from the gulf coast of Texas, the Great-tailed Grackle. They are just a obnoxious down there as they are up here in Canada.

Gosh, your bringing back posts I forgot I even made. Guess one thing that fades fast with age is your memory. Happy you have enjoyed my pics. I'm surprised you haven't seen any at your feeders ( both Common and Boat-tailed ) as they are quite prevalent on the east coast, especially Florida. If you like I'll send you a few ;-)
