Actually, a white lens among black ones are in more danger than a black one among'st white ones.

I paint all my Nikon lenses white and put large gray rubber bands around them. All of my friends are impressed and my photos are much better now.

Actually....I own TWO Novoflex 400mm f5.6 Telephoto`s , one with closefocusing macro bellows , they have handgrips and a shoulderstock , on several occasions have I been Queeried by POLICE and Airport security what the use of these lenses were , for if they were intended for photo purposes why were they not painted in White.

As an aside : I have noticed Your Lack of Civil attitude on this forum , you are Not worth my time.

White or off white lenses are a marketing ploy by Canon. Those white lenses are special in many regards never-the-less. When you see a white lens it actually is a Canon "L" quality lens, with weather sealing, dust seals, and much better optics than the Canon basic EF lens, which is black. You will pay a premium price for those white lenses also. Canon also makes "L" quality lenses below the 70-200mm which is white, but are black, with a red band around the end with the largest optical end. Those lenses are also superiorly optically and weather and dust sealed than the Canon basic EF lens. Canon also makes a Canon EF-S version of lenses but these are for the Canon crop sensor cameras such as the "Rebel" line, or the EOS "D" series cameras such as the the Canon EOS 70D. I hope this clears up your "white lens" questions.

Minolta made white lenses first. Sony has several white lenses. It is hard to make the statement that a person is shooting a canon because it is a white lens.

Ostensibly, the white barrels or casings for certain lenses was intended for their operation in tropical climates in that black surface finishes tend to absorb rather than deflect heat. Frankly, I don't know if the finish would make a significant difference in extremely inclement or torrid conditions. It is more likely that specialized lubricants on moving internal parts of lenses play a more important role in mechanical reliability in difficult conditions.

There are lenses with camouflage finishes- perhaps for military surveillance use or for nature photography? Honestly, I think most of this is cosmetics or marketing. The fast, long and expensive lenses come in exotic colors. Personally, I am strictly into lens performance and the lenses' appropriateness for the work I need it to do- I don't care about what it looks like.

I am a commercial photographer, however, I did stint with a big city daily newspaper back in the 1970s. Back in that era, at many sports and political events, accredited photographers had more freedom to roam the venues and shoot form various points of view at different distances. At big league baseball games, many photographers worked with large format camera a giant "Big Bertha" lenses form special press boxes, high above the field. Nowadays, because of security issues and the increased population of accredited press folks, most if not all of the photographers are corralled in one place, they all more or less, get the same shots form the same viewpoint and the are "dead in the water" without a compliment of long lenses- the just happen to be white, grey or whatever!

A white lens is not a press card or a document of accreditation. If someone tries to "crash the gate" with a white lens and no paperwork, chances are the will be ejected by the security guys or the police.

...and YES! There are folks who earn a living and profit from photography. It's hard work and if you are good at it, it pays off! Nobody said it is easy!
