IMO, go Mac and you will never look back. Why, they are reliable. My wife uses Windows based machines. After 2 years, she is getting a new one because they crash beyond repair. I tell her to get a Mac, she won't listen.

Apple computers are overpriced and under powered. I agree the best way to go is with a high end tower that has room to expand, which you will want to do. The new Intel I9 series processors are out and there isn't an apple out there that comes close to the speed of these new Windows computers. I built my own with 64GB of memory 2 Samsung SSD running in raid 0 2 Evga 1080gtx Video cards running in SLI mode, which is a must if you render video, and 6TB of internal storage and 8tb of external. I'm sure you checked on line and found a ton of very nice tower pc's that will grow with you. You won't be sorry going with a Windows machine.

Are you just posting to the web or printing a lot of pictures. If your printing you need a color accurate monitor. The Benq monitor cost about $600.00 but it cover adobe rgb color range. Make a print profile and send it to your print company and they will make prints that match your monitor colors. If your just posting to the web it not that important.

I love my HP Spectre 2 in 1 and depending on the processor, RAM, and HD you choose, their prices are reasonable. Light weight, gorgeous touchscreen, lighted keyboard, SD card slot. Unlike me, it’s fast, light, sleek, and handsome. The Dell XPS is great also and the new Surface looks good.

Take a look at MSI gaming laptops.

While a gaming laptop may not seem like an obvious choice, they offer a number of features that do compliment photography. There are numerous models and options available in their line.

Stay away from the toy computers from Apple. You pay three times as much for half the power. They are difficult to repair and maintain and if you need to upgrade a system, it is almost impossible. Also, they are getting more attention from the malware programmers.

Dell makes some good mid-level computers for <$1000. You can add more hard disk storage, upgrade the video easily, etc. If you want even more ASUS and some of the game computers are way higher quality. Buy a system from Costco. They provide you a month to freely return it if you don't like it. Then they give you their own tech support 800 number for two years free. (They don't rely on any of the manufacturers who have gotten as bad as Apple, HP, etc.) And their prices are right.

Yes, you do need high resolution. Do you need 4K, no, not really. But HD yes. Get a gaming laptop. Get it with at least 12GB ram, 1TB hard drive preferably one that spins 7200rpm and one with an SSD drive that it boots from. Get one with no more than one older generation of i7 processor and at least one USB 3.1 port and an HDMI port so you can connect a large screen. I'd check out the keyboard too because keyboards are sometimes really crappy. I'd get one that is backlit so you can see it in the dark. Those would be my preferences.

Macs ARE PCs. They can run Windows and Linux and Mac OS, all at the same time, if you have enough RAM and hard drive space. You can even cut and paste from apps on one OS to the other...

Most who go Macwards won’t go backwards.

If ANY of that were true, IBM would not have deployed over 100,000 Macs to its employees over the last two years. They have around a quarter million Apple devices in use! They save money on every one they deploy, because the total cost of ownership is lower. And why is that? Two factors — hardware reliability and 80% LESS help desk demand.

Consumer Reports consistently ranks Macs as most reliable and least troublesome to use. Apple gets their highest marks for service and customer satisfaction, too. Meanwhile, they just found the Microsoft Surface to be unacceptably trouble prone, so they no longer recommend it.

Dell XPS 15 with their current high resolution touch screen. I have been using the XPS 13 for two years. My photo software is DxO Optics Pro 11. I use it whenever I travel.

For photography I bought an MSI GS70-2QE two years ago, as it was the most affordable 17" laptop with 99%-100% sRGB screen and full calibration control from the "True Color" factory application. Additional wants/needs met by 16GB RAM, 256 SSD, 1 TB HD, NVIDIA 970 video card, and a 2 year factory warranty. Bought as "open box" from BHPhoto for $1,149 when it retailed for $1,799.

My choice for photo PP is a fully loaded iMac. I store my Lr catalog on an external WD Thunderbolt 2 drive and backup everything to a Synology NAS server. ALL of my external hard drive storage is configured in RAID 1, and I have a ton of it. My internal drive is a 1TB Hybrid, which is used ONLY for the OS and applications. For mobile use I have a 13" MacBook Pro. For more info, please PM me. Best of luck.

I started working with PCs in 1980, and we used windows on IBM Machines. Software was primitive and we needed accounting and word processing programs. Lotus for accounting and Word Perfect for documents. In the early 90s a couple of our Vice Presidents were using Apples at home and loved them, recommending that we should buy them for all our uses. The Macs were great for working with graphics and "artsy" things but still no good software for business.

For my own computer, I used windows just like we used at work. Upgraded storage, ram, power supplies, motherboards, etc. and kept it running. Then we bought iPhones and MS quit supporting Windows XP. So we bought a Mac. MS Excel and Word were the standards by then, so we bought the Mac version. Later I wanted a cheap laptop to take on trips, I bought an inexpensive windows 8 machine. Tried using it for 40 days, and could not after being spoiled with the intuitiveness of the Mac. Fortunately, Best Buy's manager completely understood and even though it was past the return period, gave me a full refund. Then set me up with a salesman who showed me a refurbished MacBook.

Service has been wonderful. I am not going back to the crashing windows, or android phones. I just don't need another learning curve at my age.

Best of luck, whatever you get.
