Thank you- much appreciated & good info! I take it they are an auth. Nikon USA dealer? I would Drive there to get one instead of not knowing When mine will be processed. That's also a Big part of my frustration, as I've spent Thousands of $$ there over the past 10 yrs or so & feel that Should garner some priority, but with them they only seem to care about the Pros based on my numerous contacts with them since pre-ordering & the False information I've received. Guess I'll have to start spending my Many Thousands of $$ elsewhere.. Unfortunately the Only good local camera store we had anywhere near where I live (Ritz) closed it's doors, most likely due to places like B&H/Adorama/Amazon.. Thanks for confirming my suspicions & sharing your success... :-)

Sorry if I have offended you, if it is any consolation to you I will not be owning this so called status symbol, I use my equipment and make beautiful large prints, if you need proof of my photography for some reason I will gladly share.
Life is about sharing, understanding, learning, to appreciate, oh and good photography.
I agree with you that talking equipment can be mundane but it is helpful and necessary, thank you for your earšŸ˜ŠšŸ™

Hey Klarno, it's just classic CTHAHN clap trap. Typical of him. A real loser with a bad attitude. Don't waste your time here.

Your point seems valid and may be indicative of a single problem, or more. Thanks for your alert on this problem. Deserves follow up as well as your posting of results.

I just picked up the infamous D850 from samys I have lbeen ooking forward to using this beast on fall colors.
It took me a day or so to realize how tight the lens mount actually was, well it is at least 2x tighter then d810 ever was and makes a slight grinding noise on all my lenses.
Then after reading on the internet that didgloyd had found that some hard stop lenses will not focus to infinity. So I decided to test out my zeiss lenses on night sky stars wide open and found the that at wide open I could not get two of my lenses to focus at infinity? And the others where super close but just barely focused.
Some may ask why would anyone need to focus to infinity wide open? Only reason I do is for widescape Astro, and then this becomes an issue. Even so the tight lens mount is enough for me to return it.
I feel quality control with most things these days is lackluster at best! Be it cameras, lenses, or anything.
out of the four zeiss lenses I bought, 2 were broken. I still need to send one in. Never have I had an issue with Nikon lenses. And this is the first camera I have ever had a problem with,
The old saying you get what you pay for is a bit out dated for me.

The saying usually refers to buying something cheap - the D850 is not cheap at 3300 USD....sounds like you bought grey market, demo, open box or returns at a discounted price. What you describe sounds like a lemon or "outlier" as someone called it, or it could be a return that the previous owner damaged which would explain a tight grinding lens mount. Maybe the previous owner dropped it with a long lens attached so the mount is out of alignment. If its a USA model then certainly Nikon would fix it, otherwise return it to Samy's....good luck.

First I'm curious why you refer to the D850 as "infamous". From everything I've read it's a first rate camera.

With regard to your issues, you said everything you buy from that shop comes in a box that looks a bit smashed. On top of that you are having issues with some of what they sell you, and you have to endure a 7 hour drive for the privilege of shopping there. Why oh why do you still buy from them? You can purchase from B&H, Adorama, or some similar reputable firms and get the item delivered to you door, with no shipping charge and often no sales tax, and returns are easy. Supporting your "local" brick-and-mortar store does not seem to be working out for you.

True, but this brick and mortar called me with this camera available.
I did actually start using adorama and B.

I have decided to keep the D850 I believe the mount will loosen with use and found I can adjust hardstop on my lenses, I tried to support the little guys I like talking to a human I like the tactile feel of the camera, but will not be shopping there anymore.
You sound a bit accusative in your tone,
Thank you for your concern.

I for one appreciate hearing about camera products problems. I bought a Sony Vario-Tessar T* E 16-70mm f/4 lens, also sold under the name Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar E 16-70mm f4 lens for my Sony a6000. I was very upset to find out that the center of the lens was outstanding but the sides were soft. I returned the lens for a full refund. It was only then that I found out that others had the same problem. I only found this out thru this forum. So I say let's hear about the problems and the good news.

Very sorry for the hassle, disappointment, and frustration on what should be an exciting, exhilarating, ā€œnew camera gleam and smellā€ experience. Iā€™m glad Samys will refund your money or maybe give you an exchange if they have another in stock.

This is the second time ive heard of the lens grinding when you put it on the 850 camera. This is why I never buy a camera when ity first
comes out. God knows what other problems will arise as others buy the camera.

I too saw one other person with a tight lens mount. That turned out to be only one lens out of several.
Is there a possibility that the D850 might be made to tighter tolerances than earlier models since Nikon wanted say this model was weather resistant. (or what ever their phrasing) One other person said they solved the problem by running a finger around the mount surfaces of the lens and camera to wipe off any residue and also the bit of natural oil on their finger helped.

Thank you!
After several lens changes and having a lens mounted on the camera for the last several days I am happy that it has loosened up a bit like a pair of leather boots?
I have not been able to reproduce that grinding I had with the zeiss 15.
I heard from a uhh member that if needed I can readjust hardstop on zeiss.
I am stoked to say I am keeping the camera it feels good to me now it was just kind of a rough start.
Never really experienced these issues before, but I might have been looking to closely for issues, it was quite an expensive camera.
But am am excited as ever.
Sorry for taking you down this pathway, but I have definitely learned something.

I don't think the camera retailer (Samy's in this case) would knowingly put up for sale a damaged camera just because there s a big demand. I also don't think that the camera retailer is responsible if the camera body doesn't smoothly accept lense mountings. Unfortunate that Samy's is a 7 hour drive because I think karno should take the body and his lenses and go to Samy's am\nd let their staff diagnose the problem.

Beautiful! And the credit goes to you, not the D850
