I purchased a Sony RX10 III camera off of eBay. I received it Sept. 30th. The seller told me it was in like new condition and it was two months old. I live in Phoenix and have only taken around 15 shots for I also received a book about the camera. It seems to be working fine from the little I have used it. It gets hot here and I have just not gotten out to shot photos. My wife had put the box where I truly had not looked at it before. It had a USED sticker on it. He had told me it was like new. Three days ago I called Sony to have it transferred to my name. They had to have the receipt. So I went on eBay and emailed the seller to send it to me. He had discarded it. Thus I have no warranty. This morning I called eBay and was told I had 30 days to return to seller. I again send another email to the seller and he told me it was a display model he purchased. This tells me I have no idea as to how many actuations are on it. It seems to be working fine, but I want to know your opinion as to what to do. It came with several accessories with it. He told me he was selling because of arthritis in his hands. Knowing he has arthritis and know it weight close to three pounds would you believe him. Gregger

You really have NOTHING to complain about ! .....USE the camera and make GREAT images ! - and yes, I would believe him ....

If you wanted a new camera you should have gone to B&H and paid the price.

I ordered an "OPEN BOX" from B&H (different camera) and it came used with a scratch on the lens. I will say they were very corporative in returning, but it took close to three weeks to receive my refund. Being a display bothers me because I picked up P900 at Best Buy and it would not zoom correctly.

What has believing the previous owner got to do with how well your camera is functioning? Have you tried the various settings? Is it working?
If your answers are yes ... enjoy your camera. If no, consider it a lesson learned.

I just hope I don't have to consider it a lesson learned. Being a display model worries me. Display cameras take a lot of abuse.

You buy things off of E-Bay, 95% of which is already used. I’ve sold 3 cameras, 4 lenses and assorted stuff and always make sure I am truthful in stating that the product is “used.” It’s the price you pay for dealing in that marketplace.

I purchased a Nikon D810 from Samys camera in Los Angeles that was a customer return item. Came with a 1 year Samys warranty, got a great price at the time about what you can get a new D810 for now. No issues, everything works 100%.

You didn't say what you paid for the camera, so we will assume that it was a fair price. If the camera is working well and it is in good condition, enjoy it. Don't worry about it being a demo. Also another point that has nothing to do with the camera, when you are dealing with E-Bay sellers, these are for the most part just people who are wanting to sell item that they either no longer use or are unable to use. These are not professional sales people and sometimes they do not have any idea how to word and item for sale and for the most part they post terrible photos of the items, that is clue on what is going on. Of course there are sellers that try to deceive but ebay has found a fix for that too. which BTW makes it difficult to sell on ebay as well... Just my opinion and observation as both a seller and a buyer.

Bob,
I have been using eBay since it's inception. Way before there was any PayPal. Everything was by money order. I did get taken on a camera one time. I never received it. I did receive a refund from the postal system three months later. I rarely buy from someone that doesn't have a 100% feedback. I will if they only had one to two negatives throughout the year unless the literal feedback is for something involving a lie. Electronics are the most difficult items to purchase. I try to stay away from anything from China. Of course this camera was made in China. I have been told China's quality control is much better than it used to be. I can remember when people joked about something being "Made In Japan". I have never had a problem with them. Oh, the camera was $950 which included two batteries, outlet charger for batteries, Hoya UV lens, and electronic zoom control, and a book that the seller had purchased. I love the camera, but am concerned about how long it will last after being a display item. Gregger

It’s probably fine and will last for another 80 to 100 thousand more shutter activations. You could do a complete functional test of everything to ease your mind or just send it back while you still can get a refund.
Big difference between “new” and “like new” or LNIB.

The only difference is psychological .....if you want perfection go to B&H and PAY the price ....

I have been buying and selling on ebay since 1999 ....

There are websites and apps out there that will let you know how many shutter activations there are on a camera. It’s pretty easy to do. Unfortunately I don’t have any links at hand, but I’ve done that before.

If he bought it from a store he should be able to get you a copy of the receipt. If he hedges on that I would be suspicious.

I was selling and buying on eBay since 1995. No PayPal at that time. I stopped selling when the fee's began increasing. I rarely buy unless the seller has a 100% or or two negatives a year depending on the wording of the negatives. This seller had a 100%, but rarely sells. A camera that has been on display for who knows how long is what bothered me. The seller told me he had it for only two months. I believe I am repeating myself, but he stated he had arthritis and it bothered his hands because of it's weight. Although the camera seems to be working ok, I would not have purchased it knowing it was a display item. Just a few weeks ago I purchased an
open box from B&H and the camera arrived Used with scratches on the lens. I am not a photographer I simply enjoy taking photos. I normally shoot in auto or scene modes. I also found one cannot tell the actuations on this camera having a mac computer.
