I found this guy in Alabama recently and was fortunate enough to get very close with my macro lens. Very small snake that packs a wallop! This is a dusky pygmy rattlesnake and it was curled up waiting to strike at whatever came by. Interesting how it burrowed down into the sand to lower it's already low profile.

Interesting shot and way too close for me. A 300 macro might have been ok and its an Alabama snake too.

Good shots! For some reason all my closeup rattlesnake shots show camera shake.

Beautiful!
I am glad you let him live!
Timber Rattlesnakes are rare and protected near where I live, Jersey Pinelands.
I never heard of anyone getting bit.

Thanks to all of you for your nice comments! This snake did live and I was able to go back a few hours later and let my wife see him in the same spot. They are incredibly patient. He let me sneak in close with my macro rig to capture the close ups but my fingers were always out of range. Adrenaline rush for sure!
